The 80 miles of the Columbia River Gorge’s steep rocky sides offer some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, complete with pounding waterfalls, eagles, century-old trees, ferns, flowers, and ancient rocks. Join us for a half-day of exploring and meditating on wonders with very short hikes and visits to overlooks and vistas that will have you gasping in awe. We will meet at our shop in inner Southeast Portland, where we'll gather to ride in our comfortable Mercedes Sprinter vans to the Columbia River Gorge. Here we'll visit waterfalls and overlooks, selected by our guides to include both the most iconic, like the unmissable Multnomah Falls, the tallest in Oregon and one of the most photographed waterfalls in the world, and the truly special. Depending on guide and weather conditions, this could include a few small hidden waterfalls or another spectacular plunge-style falls whose columnar basalt has us learning words for "amazing" in other languages. We'll also tell you stories, not just of the geology and botany and the oft-repeated tales of pioneers and road-builders, but also the old stories we've learned, of gods and wild spirits and the way the oldest North American civilization was forever altered by "manifest destiny." We'll tell you zen koans about waterfalls, if you're in the mood, and take time to contemplate the incredible power of water moving rocks.
I'm Sarah Gilbert, co-founder of Around Portland Tours and together with partners & guides Edwin, Evan, and Jeri will host the experiences. I'm a published writer of essays and professional storyteller, and each of the narratives around which our tours are based is a collaboration between us, writers and route designers, as a movable narrative, what we call place-based storytelling. We have decades of experience guiding bicycling, hiking and scenic tours in the Columbia Gorge, as well as wilderness readiness training and education in the botany and geology of this place. We have taken the best parts of our 1000s of visits and applied it to what we do here. In the Gorge, we will visit the highlights you cannot miss -- like Multnomah Falls -- but we will also take you beyond. More: aroundportlandtours.com @aroundportlandtours

Là où vous les emmènerez
The Columbia River Gorge is full of waterfalls and wonders! We'll stop at the Vista House, conditions permitting, what we call the "fancy bathroom," so there will be options for gift shops, coffee, and photographs galore. Each waterfall will include a short hike, so you may hike about two miles (3 km) in total. If your group has appetite for more strenuous hikes, just ask; hiking is also our business and it's what we do on our days off.
