We will start by discussing what you would like to make and the type of wood and/or stone you will need. Then we will start going through all the wood and stone I have to find the best pieces. Once the wood or stone is chosen we will discuss the best way to develop it into the final product. Then it is a question of cutting, drilling, shaping, sanding and getting the product towards the final outcome. Good driftwood projects should not require too much cutting or drilling - if fact the best work should not show any cut marks or drill holes, screw heads. The work should look as natural as possible. Cutting driftwood can be difficult - because it is not straight! We normally are trying to cut the wood straight and this can achieved by hand cutting or using an electric saw. Drilling centre holes for lamps is also difficult but I can show you how to drill 600mm holes in a straight line. Drilling holes in stone can be a challenge but I can show you the types of stone suitable for drilling and also shaping the stone, if that is required. No two projects are the same - driftwood is unique and so is the approach.
Hi, my name is Paul and I have been developing driftwood projects for ten years. I moved to the coast last year so I could be closer to the beaches that provide the raw materials I need for my craft. I studied woodwork and metalwork at school but working with driftwood requires a whole new set of skills that only experience can provide. Driftwood is not straight and sometimes not in the best condition! But part of my love of working with driftwood and beach stone is the challenge that each piece provides - I often see a piece, know what I want to do but then have to figure out the best way to approach the challenge. At the end of the process the result can be stunning as well as unique. I make all forms of lights, table lights to dining table lights and sculptures - then end result is dictated by the wood itself.

The workshop is carried out in my private studio which is setup with a variety of tools and work stations. The studio is big enough for four people, heated in winter by a wood stove, with views of the sea. On the floor I have "comfort mats" to protect feet from hard, cold concrete. The studio is very private and there is plenty of private car parking available.

Before you go to the studio have a think about the type of driftwood piece you would like to make. For instance, tea light holders are very simple and quick to make. Driftwood lamps will take all day (9:00 to 5:00) but large mosaics will take much longer. You can message me with ideas before hand.
