Au programme

Take local bus through the backroads of the Dublin foothills to a remote mountain village.
Following a meandering mountain path, visit an ancient burial "wedge" tomb from the second millennium B.C., nestled in a forest.
Continuing along the Dublin Mountains Way, arrive at a popular vantage point and take in the panoramic views over Dublin and the bay area, perched on a mountain top rock.
Depending in the season, pause to pick some delicious wild berries....to add to cream or ice-cream later, or just eat as is! Continuing along a ridge, with views of Dublin to the north, and Wicklow to the south, arrive at a second burial tomb, this time an ancient stone circle and burial pace of the man for whom the mountain top upon which it sits is named.
After a leisurely wander down a meandering path through an evergreen forest, followed by a rural backroad, arrive at a quaint, rustic, cafe and restaurant to enjoy a well earned lunch made of local produce and cuisine.
An Alternative bus returns back to the finish point via a different but equally enchanting route.

IF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT TAKING PUBLIC TRANSPORT AT THIS TIME, AN ALTERNATIVE BUT SIMILAR HIKE WHERE YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN PRIVATE TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS TO THE START AND FINISH POINT CAN BE FACILITATED. JUST MESSAGE ME WITH YOUR ENQUIRY SO WE CAN ARRANGE
Other things to note
Guests must have a reasonable level of fitness, no adverse health conditions, and be able to walk 12km (7.5 miles) on gently sloping ground.

Hiking has been both a passion and a hobby of mine since I climbed my first mountain in County Kerry, Ireland, and the age of 10. More than four decades later, I still love it as much as ever, and have built up a bank for experience, knowledge and skills along the way. I regularly organise and lead hikes in the Dublin and Wicklow region, where I live. I have a certificates in Outdoor Pursuits (including mountain and navigation skills), REC3 (Rescue Emergency Care), and Leave No Trace Awareness. I am also a qualified regional guide. I have a keen interest in local history, geography and the natural environment. There is nothing I like more than meeting old and new friends out on the hills, and sharing my passion with them.

Destinations

The first stop will be to an ancient "wedge" burial tomb, one of four types found in Ireland. This one dates from the second millennium B.C. and is majestically hidden away in the corner of a forest.

The next stop is on a hilltop overlooking Ireland's capital city and surrounding area.

A second burial tomb and cairn on a mountain ridge with views of Wicklow and Dublin.

A forest walk followed by lunch in a rustic house hidden in the hillside

I had a great afternoon hike with Ben. The tombs were interesting and the sights spectacular. I would definitely do another hike with Ben.

Definitely our favorite experience on out trip to Dublin. It was great to get out of the city and see a bit of Ireland’s natural beauty and legendary culture. As an American of generally good fitness, this experience was moderate/difficult, so definitely do not underestimate preparing with good hiking shoes, warm clothing (we went in January), and some snacks/water. Ben made us feel so welcome, and was extremely knowledgeable about Celtic culture and modern Irish trivia/current events. We thoroughly enjoyed the company and experience, and would definitely do it again on our next trip to Ireland!

We weren’t really sure what to expect with this hike, just kind of looking for anything to do on Christmas Eve when most things were closed, but it was truly amazing and we’re so glad we did it. The views were stunning and Ben’s company was so enjoyable it was well worth the nasty bit of wind and rain for part of it. If you like hiking even a little bit I highly recommend this experience! If we ever come back in the spring or summer we hope Ben will still be around.

Ben was an amazing guide! He shared so much about the history of Ireland and used his knowledge of the Gaelic language to give more meaning to his stories. The hike itself was beautiful. The landscape and foliage made it very special. We experienced rain and wind during the hike, but with proper gear, you will be comfortable. Ben went above and beyond during our experience. He stopped to take our photos during the hike and will be sending them to us later. After the hike, we ate lunch and visited a petting zoo. After lunch, we had time before the bus arrived and stopped to have a pint. When the bus dropped us off at the meeting point, Ben offered to show us a more affordable way to get back to our Airbnb. He went with us to get a Leap Card (the card used for public transportation) and showed us how to get on the LUAS (rail system). We are so pleased with our experience and with Ben! He is a superstar tour guide!

This was pretty much my favorite thing from 3 weeks in Ireland. It is magical to see the ancient places of Celtic and (likely Pict or Danae) people. The viewpoints are the viewpoints of ancient kings and the forests surrounding tombs are timeless and you expect a druid to appear behind a tree at any moment. Ben was a wonderful guide. He knew so much about Ireland's history and the sites we were seeing. The hike is a decent distance so you feel like you got some exercise and it makes the lunch at the cafe in the woods later taste amazing. But it is not steep and all on maintained trials. (I did it all in slip on Merrells BTW.) The hike was well-planned and I liked we did not back track. Ben was very very friendly, personable and flexible on things. He also was well-prepared and I felt safe and everyone was in great hands. This experience shows you an important part of Ireland. Literally it's foundations. It's magic!
