Au programme

Your 3-hour boat tour begins on the Beaufort Waterfront and ventures into remote areas of the Rachel Carson Reserve not accessible by the local ferry operators. You'll observe dolphins, turtles, shorebirds, and wild horses during your transit along the shores & tidal creeks of the Reserve. I'll guide your exploration of the natural history & ecosystem as we journey through tidal flats, sandy beaches, & upland growth of maritime forests. You'll learn about the history of the Reserve's most famous residents (i.e. , horses) and observe the equine marvels feeding and interacting along the edges of tidal marsh. We'll observe ospreys, eagles, & shorebirds that feed and gather in this pristine ecosystem and explore the vital role Rachel Carson played in their survival. Located along the Atlantic Flyway, the Reserve provides a resting & refueling point for numerous migratory birds. You'll have ample opportunities to capture nature with your camera or collect seashells cast ashore with the tides. I'll also provide an overview of the various research projects being conducted in the Reserve. Your tour ends where we began. Sunset Tours are also available. Look for the late afternoon times on the calendar. (Miriam has been guiding visitors through the Rachel Carson Reserve since 1997. [Feel free to contact me to discuss possible tour dates/times not shown on the calendar.]

As a member of the Reserve's Advisory Board and my collaboration with local researchers, I am knowledgeable of the Reserve's history and ecosystem as well as the projects being conducted throughout the Reserve. As a former middle school science teacher, I have led tours through the Rachel Carson Reserve for 20+ years. I have extensive knowledge of the maritime history and coastal dynamics along the southern outer banks of North Carolina. As a certified boat captain (USCG-OUPV), I can provide a stress-free excursion allowing you to focus on the tranquility and beauty of the Reserve's unique ecosystem. As a science and nature photographer, I can assist you in finding unique compositions during your tour.

First off, I'm not sure we could have had better weather for our outing. Miriam was a wonderfully knowledgable guide throught the Rachel Carson reserve. Her love for the area shines through how she tells stories about the area. Seeing the wild horses was wonderful, and the visit from the dolphins was even better!

Fantastic tour! We were graced with a bluebird day on Miriam's boat. She is wealth of information on the area and wildlife. We made our way around the Rachel Carson Reserve and even stopped at a couple of islands and sand bars to look for shells. The ecology of this area is really interesting. We saw wild horses, albacore, dolphins, and stingrays among others. The topography of the area constantly changes with storms and tides. A great way to get to know the area!

I took my Mother on this excursion as a late Mothers Day present and was very glad I did. We both love the area and learning as much as we can about an area we are visiting and this trip did not disappoint. Since we do not kayak, we were able to travel paths that we would normally nit be able to go. The wildlife was amazing and the wild horses up close were even more beautiful. I enjoyed hearing about the different project that were on going to help learn more about the environment, in order to sustain a healthier and stable area.
