Au programme

This is a fun creative class that any adult can do. You will hear fascinating stories about the Maine lobstering history as you receive professional weaving instruction. Not only will you enjoy learning to weave, but you will take home a colorful, durable all-season doormat.

We will meet at Thistledown Farm behind Penny’s authentic 1850s barn, in a large canvas tent classroom. Penny will describe the history behind the colorful rope used in lobstering. After her brief talk, you will dive right in. Your experienced instructor will help you choose your rope and doormat design, show you how to set up your jig, and splice the rope. She will provide ongoing assistance and tips as you nourish your soul, awaken your creative genius, and create your masterpiece. After everyone has finished their mat, we will hang them up for a photoshoot.
Other things to note:
Class size is limited so there is plenty of space for achieving social distancing.
Dress appropriately for hot weather. Classes are held in a large canvas tent.
This activity requires at least 1 to 1 1/2 hours of standing so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Penny founded the Maine Float Rope Co, home of Down East Doormats, starting New England's craze for the unique colorful lobster trap rope mats. These fun and durable rugs were featured in Elle, Bon Appetite, Down East Magazine, Yankee, Architectural Digest, Martha Stewart and many more. They were sold throughout the US and internationally. Down East Doormats was the Winner of Best New Product at the New England Products Show. Penny's aesthetic sense of design can be seen not only in her doormats but as evidenced in her 1850s repurposed post and beam barns which she has turned into her charming AirBnB rentals, Thistledown Farm’s Pennysworth, Udder Heaven, Sheep Shed Cottage, Penny's Perch, The Pemaquid and The Penobscot.

A wonderful experience that helps you bring home an authentic piece of Maine that is “woven” with a good memory. My grandfather was a lobsterman and this experience was magical in honoring him. 💖🦞

I had the best time! My instructor's name was Giselle. The class takes place on Penny's property, and wow is it beautiful! Her house is just amazing and she rents rooms through airbnb which I will definitely be booking. Ok, so about the class. Giselle showed me some finished doormats they have for sale to get an idea of patterns and size. Then she took me to the recycled rope yard to pick out my colors. She set up the jig and got me started on my doormat. Giselle is very patient and an expert at weaving and troubleshooting. Once you get started, it is a very easy process. I made a large size mat and it took me about 2.5 hrs from start to finish. I love that I got to take a finished piece home with me! I drove 3 hrs to participate in this experience and would not hesitate to do it again. Penny and Giselle are so friendly, the property beautiful, my doormat is awesome, just a wonderful experience.

This class was SO much fun. Penny and Giselle do an amazing job to teach about both the history and the craft of lobster rope mats. Giselle worked closely with both of us to ensure we created a mat that we loved. I cannot recommend this class enough! It’s a great way to add creativity to your Maine trip.

Incredible experience in a magic location. Penny, the owner of the property, lead the lesson and shared so many wonderful stories including the history of the recycled lobster rope we used to make the mat—I’ll save that story for the lesson :) I highly recommend this for anyone interested in learning how to make a mat in an amazing location. For parents: I would consider this a kid friendly activity with careful supervision. There is a heated rope cutter used to cut and fuse rope together.
