Au programme

This is a fun creative class that any adult can do. You will hear fascinating stories about the Maine lobstering history as you receive professional weaving instruction. Not only will you enjoy learning to weave, but you will take home a colorful, durable all-season doormat.

We will meet at Thistledown Farm behind Penny’s authentic 1850s barn, in a large canvas tent classroom. Penny will describe the history behind the colorful rope used in lobstering. After her brief talk, you will dive right in. Your experienced instructor will help you choose your rope and doormat design, show you how to set up your jig, and splice the rope. She will provide ongoing assistance and tips as you nourish your soul, awaken your creative genius, and create your masterpiece. After everyone has finished their mat, we will hang them up for a photoshoot.
Other things to note:
Class size is limited so there is plenty of space for achieving social distancing.
Dress appropriately for hot weather. Classes are held in a large canvas tent.
This activity requires at least 1 to 1 1/2 hours of standing so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Penny founded the Maine Float Rope Co, home of Down East Doormats, starting New England's craze for the unique colorful lobster trap rope mats. These fun and durable rugs were featured in Elle, Bon Appetite, Down East Magazine, Yankee, Architectural Digest, Martha Stewart and many more. They were sold throughout the US and internationally. Down East Doormats was the Winner of Best New Product at the New England Products Show. Penny's aesthetic sense of design can be seen not only in her doormats but as evidenced in her 1850s repurposed post and beam barns which she has turned into her charming AirBnB rentals, Thistledown Farm’s Pennysworth, Udder Heaven, Sheep Shed Cottage, Penny's Perch, The Pemaquid and The Penobscot.

Great fun! And we went home with a beautiful and practical mat! Our talented instructor was excellent and provided as much one-on-one assistance as needed. It was very helpful that they had examples of other mats to give ideas for designing your own. Loved hearing the history behind the lobster ropes. And no prior skills were needed.

We had a fabulous morning with Giselle and Penny. Lots of personalized attention. We are looking forward to next year and making more mats - already have our colors picked out!

Giselle was so friendly and helpful and Penny gave us some history of lobster fishing and the use of the float ropes. The outdoor tent set up was perfect for covid safety. We really enjoyed that we were able to create something unique and look forward to seeing the mats every day and remembering our trip to Maine! Would absolutely recommend!
