Au programme

Learn the basics of beekeeping and get a behind the scenes look at chimpanzees living in sanctuary in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains! This extra sweet, 2.5-hour experience has two exciting parts:

First, we'll share the basics of setting up a honeybee hive. We'll suit up and open an active hive for an up close look at the worker bees, drones and, maybe, the queen. You'll learn the different roles the bees play, some basic bee communication, and see how the bees store pollen and honey.

We may also feed the bees a little honey so you can examine a honeybee up close. Then we'll try some for ourselves! The bees at Project Chimps produce wildflower honey and sourwood honey and the excess is used as nutritional enrichment for the former research chimpanzees in our care.

Second, you'll have a rare opportunity to see some of the chimps and learn about their unique life in sanctuary. Because we aren't a zoo, you'll see the chimps in a relaxed, peaceful setting, unlike anything you've experienced before. The chimps have access to a 6-acre forest and while chimp sightings are never guaranteed, they usually like to see who has come to visit!

The walking tour lasts about one hour and is similar to a moderate hike. There is no contact between humans and chimps, but you will have the opportunity to see them up close and personal for a once in a lifetime experience!
Other things to note
While all precautions are taken to prevent bee stings, they may still occur. Be prepared!

Please note that Project Chimps is a sanctuary for chimpanzees previously used in medical research. It is not a zoo and the chimps are not on display. Chimps are almost always seen but it's their choice!

I'm Kathryn, the Volunteer Coordinator at Project Chimps, and I love introducing new guests to our sanctuary for chimpanzees retired from medical research. I am also a beekeeper in my home life and we have an active apiary at Project Chimps that I helped set up too! We harvest the honey just for the chimps. At Project Chimps, I will introduce you to beekeeping followed by a tour to see former research chimps up close in their 6-acre forested outdoor habitat. I started as a volunteer myself before the first chimpanzee arrived at this location and have been here ever since, working part time and now full time. We can't take care of these precious souls without folks like you coming to learn about them, meet them, and help us care for them. We look forward to meeting you!

It was our lucky day! The chimps were active and we spent quite a bit of time watching them. One of them put on quite a display right in front of us. Just unforgettable experience.
