Au programme

This unique three-part, 3 hours, walking tour will begin where Manhattan began - at the National Museum of the American Indian. Each part of the tour will last approximately 1 hour. This first leg of the tour will start in the Financial District. Specifically, Bowling Green, where the first enslaved Africans started building the infrastructure of the city, and end at Wall St when the enslaved Africans were brought and sold. The walking distance will be approximately 3/4 of a mile and we will cover about 10 sites.
The second leg of the tour will continue in the Financial District. We will walk up Wall St to Federal Hall - a site next to a famous free African who owned and operated a famous Oyster House in 1825; We will discuss the NY Stock Exchange. This walking distance will be about 1 mile and we will cover about 10 sites along the way.
The last leg will start around the Brooklyn Bridge, including the African Burial Ground National Monument (entrance is optional); Depending on the interaction, we will end at the infamous 5-Points area at Pearl St. The walking distance will be approximately 3/4 of a mile and cover about 10 sites.
Depending on the mood and convenience of the group we can stop for lunch, or a snack, at any time. Each location is based on a specific chapter in my book. There will be 4-5 restroom breaks. Children of all ages are welcome! :)

Greetings! I'm a native New Yorker, a self-published author of the book, "You Are Here - A Geographical History of Enslaved and Free Africans in Manhattan: 1613 - 1865," and a certified NYC tour guide. For the past 2 years, I've given presentations about my book at schools and community organizations. I've lived in all five boroughs of NYC, but I claim Manhattan. I've worked in Manhattan as a Paralegal for over 20 years, I was educated here, I've visited most of NYC's museums, I've partied and experienced the nightlife here, and I survived the 9/11 tragedy at the WTC. This city, past & present represents my soul's work; I would like to share my love for the city with this fascinating African American tour of NYC.

Destinations

This fun-filled educational tour will cover the areas south of Brooklyn Bridge and the areas east of Broadway. Some of the sites on this tour are famous, i.e. Brooklyn Bridge, Federal Hall, Fraunces Tavern, South Street Seaport, etc. and some are lesser-known. However, out of the 20 sites, they all have a connection with African American history that few people are aware of - this is what makes this tour unique.

Lawrence is incredibly nice and knowledgeable. The tour covered an essential and often overlooked aspect of Manhattan. I do wish the tour could be condensed to 2-2.5 hours and cover the same material more efficiently but some of the reason we ran a bit over was a bit out of his control (long bathroom break). As he finesses the tour, I’m sure he will learn how to perfect the material.

Lawrence is awesome! Not like regular tours. Really goes into some AA specific history that he has researched and knows about. I look at Manhattan different now. This is a must do activity. Thanks Lawrence.

A MUST-DO for every visitor and local! Larry is a masterful educator and story teller, and this was one of the best tours I’ve ever taken. Three hours went by in the blink of an eye. Larry’s depth of knowledge and intensive research were evident. This is the history we should all be learning about right now. 10/10 recommend!!

I am so glad I have been on this tour and I wish I had known this side of history much sooner! Would love to share what I learned to friends and family but would be much better they hear it from Larry! Very reasonably priced for all the information we got!

I learned so much about the African American journey and how even now are not recognized for the contribution to building the city. If you’re not afraid to learn and leave the tour fired up to “do something” than this is the tour for you!!
