Au programme

This unique three-part, 3 hours, walking tour will begin where Manhattan began - at the National Museum of the American Indian. Each part of the tour will last approximately 1 hour. This first leg of the tour will start in the Financial District. Specifically, Bowling Green, where the first enslaved Africans started building the infrastructure of the city, and end at Wall St when the enslaved Africans were brought and sold. The walking distance will be approximately 3/4 of a mile and we will cover about 10 sites.
The second leg of the tour will continue in the Financial District. We will walk up Wall St to Federal Hall - a site next to a famous free African who owned and operated a famous Oyster House in 1825; We will discuss the NY Stock Exchange. This walking distance will be about 1 mile and we will cover about 10 sites along the way.
The last leg will start around the Brooklyn Bridge, including the African Burial Ground National Monument (entrance is optional); Depending on the interaction, we will end at the infamous 5-Points area at Pearl St. The walking distance will be approximately 3/4 of a mile and cover about 10 sites.
Depending on the mood and convenience of the group we can stop for lunch, or a snack, at any time. Each location is based on a specific chapter in my book. There will be 4-5 restroom breaks. Children of all ages are welcome! :)

Greetings! I'm a native New Yorker, a self-published author of the book, "You Are Here - A Geographical History of Enslaved and Free Africans in Manhattan: 1613 - 1865," and a certified NYC tour guide. For the past 2 years, I've given presentations about my book at schools and community organizations. I've lived in all five boroughs of NYC, but I claim Manhattan. I've worked in Manhattan as a Paralegal for over 20 years, I was educated here, I've visited most of NYC's museums, I've partied and experienced the nightlife here, and I survived the 9/11 tragedy at the WTC. This city, past & present represents my soul's work; I would like to share my love for the city with this fascinating African American tour of NYC.

Destinations

This fun-filled educational tour will cover the areas south of Brooklyn Bridge and the areas east of Broadway. Some of the sites on this tour are famous, i.e. Brooklyn Bridge, Federal Hall, Fraunces Tavern, South Street Seaport, etc. and some are lesser-known. However, out of the 20 sites, they all have a connection with African American history that few people are aware of - this is what makes this tour unique.

We learned so much on this tour! Lawrence is super knowledgeable and passionate about African American history in New York. Lawrence expertly reveals the history that is hiding seemingly in plain sight all around us. Even as native New Yorkers we gained so much newfound knowledge from him. Highly recommend!

OMG THIS WAS AMAZING!!! As an African-American I knew New York had some history of slavery, but I was not aware of much of the information that I was told today. Lawrence was engaging, knowledgeable and had a way of giving information where you really understood it. I would recommend this tour for anybody who like to not only get NY African-American history but general history about the beginnings of Manhattan

Larry is AWESOME! The entire tour was absolutely mesmerizing and enlightening. If you have the chance I highly recommend you sign up for this tour - Larry is extremely knowledgeable, answered every question in detail, and is very kind. He even stayed an extra hour beyond the scheduled tour to show me the African Burial Ground National Monument. Thank you for everything, Larry!! :-)

An 11/10 experience. Lawrence was super informative and my entire group, which had six members, was engaged throughout the tour. We learned so many facts (which are CREDIBLY SOURCED) about the history of Manhattan and how Black people literally built the city for free. Worth every penny, we just wish the city did a better job of preserving our history and the pivotal role Black people played in its origins.

I’ve lived in NYC for 14 years. I knew that enslaved Africans were present in colonial NYC, but the legacy of slavery in NYC is overwhelmingly obscured. Larry has done incredible work investigating, recording, and sharing the history of free and enslaved Africans in NYC. He is fully present with you during the tour and is very engaging. The facts he shares are made more poignant by his critical analysis of this important and painful history. I could not recommend this tour more! It has changed the way I think of this city. Larry, we can’t thank you enough for sharing your insights.
