Au programme

In this Experience, you can create: A completely original tumbler of your own design, using the traditional pattern of Ohe Kapala. "Ohe” means bamboo and ”Kapala” means stamp in Hawaiian. In Hawaii, before the modern textiles came out with aloha shirts, there were the ancient ways of decorating clothing made with kapa (=beaten inner fibers of the wild mulberry tree) by bamboo stamps(=Ohe Kapala). This workshop will guide you through the process of printing the stamp, cutting the paper, and inserting it into a tumbler. Not only that, we will also showcase different native Hawaiian designs and their layered meanings relative to place, season, nature, and family lineage. You'll be able to learn the design language of Hawaiian stamps and print patten that tells your story. Various kinds of stamps are prepared for this workshop. How you select and layout the stamps is totally up to you! And tumbler makes a perfect gift for yourself and/or your loved ones! Please note that this experience does not teach you how to carve the actual bamboo. This class is more focused on making your original tumbler using traditional design of "Ohe Kapala". If you are interested in making your own stamp, Aya will explain how to so that you can make one with materials you can find back home! *Tumbler can be upgraded to Hot/Cold stainless travel mug *Great activity as well for kids over 3 yrd!

Aya & Shawn

ALOHA! We are Aya & Shawn, hosting Airbnb Accommodation since 2014 and Airbnb Experience since 2018. Aya graduated from Hawaii Community College at University of Hawaii, where she studied Hawaiian Studies with an emphasis on Hula Dance. There, she learned various different aspects of Hawaiian Culture including "Ohe Kapala". She learned this skill in the process of creating Hula attire/costume for her final stage. Hula dance is evaluated not just by the dancing, but also by the attire and lei the dancer wears. Costume takes important role in enhancing the meaning of the dance and is assessed in the point of view if its material and textiles are relevant to the dance. After graduating from college, she continued and improved this skill among community. Now she is trying to share this beautiful culture to the guest from all over the world.
