Once you’ve arrived the morning of the class, we’ll review material and color options and once you’ve decided on those, cut the uppers from our existing patterns. You’ll then sew the upper pieces together and pull the sewn uppers around the shoe last (this is called “lasting”). Next step is to attach the pre-prepared outsoles to the lasted uppers, then remove the partially-completed shoe from the last, slip in a comfort insole, and you’ll have a completed pair of vegan shoes to wear home and brag about on Instagram!

Please note: The first step actually occurs after you’ve signed up for the class, and before you arrive for class. With at least three days’ notice, I’ll request your shoe size and design choice so that I can prepare your outsoles (this takes me about 3-4 hours per pair, so I wouldn’t be able to do this on the day of class). The style options available for women are an almond-toe flat, casual oxford and a sneaker. Men can choose between a chukka boot and a sneaker. If you’re having a hard time deciding, just let me know and we can discuss it!

COVID-19 Advisory: I used to allow groups of up to four students, but am currently keeping each session to just two people maximum to ensure everyone's safety and adequate social distancing during the entirety of the class. :)

Please reach out with any questions!

I'm a professional shoemaker who studied the craft briefly in pursuit of my bachelor's degree, deciding to make it my lifelong pursuit when I enrolled at the London College of Fashion in 2009. Upon completion of the shoemaking program in 2011, I moved to New York City to work in corporate footwear until 2015 when I went out on my own to make shoes full-time. I went vegan in 2017 and launched a vegan shoe line called Loyal Footwear, the only one of its kind in the United States. I have spent the last two years traveling the world sourcing the best vegan materials available for my own line, successfully crowdfunding $50K+ via Kickstarter and Indiegogo in the summer of 2019. I have taught shoemaking for years, and I am excited to share my experience and my small shoe factory with others to help them make their own vegan pair of custom shoes!

My fiancée and I gifted this workshop to each other for our anniversary and it was such an amazing thing to do together. It took all day but it flew by. We left with two pairs of beautiful and unique boots that look and feel like us. Rebecca is super helpful and a great instructor. She gave us space to do it ourselves but offered assistance when we needed it. She taught us how to not be wasteful in our tracing and cutting, and we learned about the different ways shoes were made in the past vs today. All around a great experience and with such an amazing take-home element, it’s well worth it. Also, Sully the greyhound’s surprise visit was an added bonus.

This class was an absolute blast! Rebecca has loads of deep knowledge, but doesn't overwhelm you with it. She is a joy to be around and really helped and encouraged me to make a shoe I would love. The facility is really hip and you feel immersed in what you are doing. Sully and Curtis were excellent additions and I just had a blast. I even learned loads! The chukka boot I made it going to be a crowd pleaser! Thanks to Rebecca for an exceptional experience. I had a such a mellow and fun time. Great people, great experience.

Such a wonderful experience to appreciate and learn how shoes are made. I love that this is a vegan-friendly course and had many beautiful styles and materials to choose from. You can't beat the feeling of coming home with a pair of shoes YOU made from scratch.

What an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Rebecca and her family—including Sully the dog, who stole the show—were so welcoming. Rebecca reached out well in advance to confirm shoe size and discuss what style of shoe we wanted to make. When we arrived, all the materials we needed were ready for us. Rebecca was an excellent teacher, stepping in to help when needed but letting us perform any tasks we were able to. When an expert hand was required, she showed us what she was doing and explained the process to us. I really enjoyed learning about the process of shoemaking and was surprised by how much of the process I was able to do myself, and I also enjoyed spending time with Rebecca, who is so friendly and knowledgeable. I could not recommend this class more and am sure this will be worth your time and investment.

I had so much fun making my own pair of shoes. I generally only wear sneakers so when I signed up I thought it would be a good idea to make something a little dressier, so I chose to make the chukka boots out of black Piñatex (pineapple leather). They look awesome! I had never used a sewing machine before, so she helped me learn the basics on a few scraps before I actually started sewing the boot uppers together. And I will admit that she offered to sew a couple of the more tricky pieces together for me. I was more than fine with that. I chose black recycled rubber for the soles, which has specs of other colors in it. So they look like a dressy pair of shoes from afar, but as you get closer you see all of the fun little details and textures that really set them apart from everything else. I would definitely take another class of hers, she is so knowledgeable and patient, and just really sweet. Her dog is very handsome and friendly too. Highly recommended!

So I’ve never made anything like this before. I’ve used a sewing machine a total of one time my entire life before taking this class so that made me a little nervous. The only things I’ve ever made were out of wood and metal, so I do have some experience working with my hands, but shoes are a whole different type and level of craft. Within five minutes of arriving for the workshop, I immediately felt comfortable and all of my nervousness about totally screwing up my custom pair of shoes disappeared. Rebecca filled us in briefly on her back story and why and how she fell in-love with making shoes, and her enthusiasm and passion for the craft was contagious. I’m really into shoes, much more than any of my friends, so it was fun to spend a whole day with other people who are just as excited about shoes as I am. The process was very straightforward. I had messaged back and forth with Rebecca about which style to make, finally settling on sneakers as I wanted a pair that didn’t look overly sporty. They are absolutely sick. Two of my friends told me they want to take the class, I might actually take it again with them to make a different style, as I was already on the fence about which to choose. If I had one criticism, it’s that the class isn’t longer. I would love to spend an entire week (or month?!) learning shoemaking from Rebecca! 👟👟
