Au programme
Unlike most wine experiences in Paris, this tour includes a visit to a living vineyard and includes 3 wine tastings. It is a historical winebar crawl that starts in the Jardin des Plantes where we begin our history of Paris' vineyards with some background on viticulture and the wines of Paris. The walk continues on past the vestiges of the Halle aux Vins and the Abbaye St-Victor to the Roman Arena (former site of the medieval vineyard 'the Clos des Arenes'), the rue Rollin and the Place de la Contrescarpe where we have our first tasting.
This neighbourhood has been the focus of a lively bar scene since the Middle Ages and has hosted countless writers, poets and artists including Rabelais, François Villon, Hemingway, Descartes, Blaise Pascal, James Joyce, George Orwell and George Sand, to name a few.
We continue along the rue Thouin and the rue Descartes with a pause to see the vestiges of the Philippe Auguste wall, completed in 1210. Carrying on past Saint Etienne du Mont and the Pantheon we come to our second tasting on the Place Larue. Nearby, the rue du Clos Bruneau and the rue Clos Garlande bear testimony to the presence of the vine. Descending the Montagne Saint-Geneviève, we end our tour on the rue des Ecoles for our final tasting in the quartier Saint-Victor, not far from Notre Dame. https://www.airbnb.com/users/show/7211110
Other things to note
Though the distances we cover are not great, there are at least 2 kilometres of walking and we'll often be standing. Good shoes and weather appropriate clothing are important. Much of our time is outdoors. We try to balance the comprehensive historcial background with lots of wine & food tasting!

I began my life in France in a vineyard and have been exploring wines ever since, because vineyards tell stories. I have been leading wine & gastronomic tours around France since the late 1980s and so have had the privilege of visiting some of the greatest domains in the world and befriending their owners. I have taught courses on wine and wine-tasting, courses on biodynamic wine & agriculture and made a film entitled 'In Vino Veritas'. For the past 3 years I have been sharing the true history of Paris, which is wine, by hosting wine walks to the secret vineyards of Paris. Among these, 'Wine your way through the Marais', 'Vines in Saint-Germain', the 'Three-vineyard cyclng tour' and 'Belleville Unbottled!' Check-out my other walks here: https://www.airbnb.com/users/show/7211110
