Enchanted by the Northside and Mexican War Streets? Me, too! This is an opportunity to take a walking tour with a local resident. Stroll Victorian streets and parks, learning about this vibrant section of Pittsburgh. From the Civil War era through today's revitalization of the arts, tech and culture, I'll share my delighted, curious and informed perspective of this storied and diverse community.
We'll begin on the site of a path blazed by the Seneca Indians , and weave through history to the present day. Guests will enjoy guessing games and activities along the way, enjoying anecdotes about Northside residents past and present, some reputable, some not! We'll learn about the revitalization and artistic renaissance that makes this area special. The 2 mile route is flat, with endless opportunities for photography and room for questions. You will leave feeling a connection to the community and one another, as well as a new appreciation for the depth and diversity of the Steel City. Guests will be provided with tips for VIP treatment at local food and drink venues after the tour, and are encouraged to continue enjoying the neighborhood on their own!
Note this is a walking tour. There are opportunities to sit for a spell along the way, and it will take 1.5 to 2 hours to walk just 2 miles. But you will be walking!

I am a native New Yorker, and moved to Pittsburgh from Florida. I unexpectedly fell crazy in love with the beauty and friendliness of Pittsburgh, specifically the Northside and Mexican War Streets. I am a part-time professor and amateur historian, and find joy in sharing my knowledge and experience with visitors. It is so much fun to meet new people. It's great to impart my enthusiasm for this incredible community and its evolution over the centuries from steel city to a center of arts and technology. My husband and I are in the process of renovating an 1860 home in the area, and I am a member of the Allegheny City Historical Society and Mexican War Streets Society. It is my pleasure to welcome folks to my adopted home town.

Destinations

Our tour begins in Front of the New Hazlett Theater, and will take us through parks and cobblestone streets, and a tree-lined Victorian neighborhood on the north shore of Pittsburgh. The area was once known as "Allegheny City", and is now called "Northside" or the "Mexican War Streets" by locals. We'll pass and learn about museums, historical sites and homes, as well as view public art installations.

Five stars doesn't do justice to the experience! Barbara goes above and beyond with this tour! She is super charming, very engaging, knows every part of the neighborhood, she will give you all the inside-out of the area, also happen that she's friends with everybody! Mexican War Streets Tour is an amazingly unique experience that you won't regret, and Barbara will make sure of that.

This tour was fantastic! The location is beautiful and the content of the tour was so well thought out. I grew up near Pittsburgh and Barbara taught me so many things that I never knew! She's also just a very nice person to spend your afternoon with. Highly recommend!

Barbara is an extremely well-informed, knowledgeable guide, packed with information about the history and residents of her beloved neighborhood, the Mexican War Streets. She was an excellent storyteller, and I was a little sad when the tour ended because I really enjoyed it.

Barbara was terrific! She kindly accommodated our schedule and the weather. We've been on many walking tours and Barbara's was one of the best! Couldn't have asked for anything better!

This was hands down my favorite tour in Pittsburgh!! Barbara is full of interesting knowledge about the entire area. I was inspired in many ways and you will be sure to see things in a new way when it comes to houses, art, community, and much more. I scheduled a private tour with my young adult daughter and she felt the same way. I will bring the rest of my family back next time in Pittsburgh and can’t wait to do it again!!

Amazing knowledge of a very special area! Barbara went out of her way to describe the Gilded Age, the Industrial Age, and the rebound out of decay to rejuvenated homes of this fascinating community. I was able to relate to her stories about rebirth and community spirit by walking the streets, peeking in the collective gardens, and noting poetry throughout the “Mexican War” neighborhood streets. Really enjoyed the architecture and the fun facts. Two hours well spent getting,to know an area of Pittsburgh from a knowledgeable insider.
