Au programme

We will walk around London in a small, intimate group (5 persons max), visit a great number of sites, learn about concrete and its historic and social significance, and spend time admiring and photographing these at most dramatic angles. Loved by some, loathed by others, the rugged urban fortresses we will be locating are excellent examples of the most influential architectural style of the 60s and the 70's that changed the landscape of our cities forever..

The discourse about the future of brutalist landmarks is as stern and uncompromising as the very buildings it assesses : The ongoing struggle among local authorities, preservation societies, residents associations and royal patronage, can in some cases result in preserved or repurposed landmarks, but also quite often in their demolition and permanent loss. Perceptions about these strangely alluring monolithic structures has varied though the years, and where once brutalist buildings have been symbols of a futuristic outlook and a modern way of living, they have also gradually become symbols of urban decay and near totalitarian oppression. So what does the future hold for these impressive concrete beasts ?

I am an urban storyteller : a fan of brutalist and mid-century architecture who also likes engaging with abandoned spaces and forgotten history. I am the founder of www.explorabilia.co.uk, a travel company that helps people discover the most astonishing, off beat spaces hidden in plain sight around us ! I do chilled out, fun walking tours with like minded people where we can enjoy special locations and exchange views about their history and significance.

I've completed "Supporting the Safety of Women | Travelers & Hosts" seminar facilitated by the National Network to End Domestic Violence (May 6th, 2019)

I’ve received a 2-year CPR & First Aid certification from the Red Cross (issued Sept. 11th, 2019)

Destinations

The tour lasts just over 3 hours, and we'll visit masterpieces such as The Brunswick Centre, The ECL Institute of Education, the Royal National Theater and the Barbican Estate - among others. The tour begins at Russel Square Tube station and it ends at the Barbican Estate. We may need to hop on the tube once or twice to span longer distances faster and cover more landmarks.

The architectural walk was a fantastic way to spend a weekend morning. Evan was knowledgeable, professional and clearly very passionate! I’m local to London and I’ve learned so much…. Helped me to look at buildings (both familiar and newly discovered ones) in new light. Couldn’t recommend it more!

This was a wonderful experience, even a great thing to do as a Londoner. We learned details of buildings that we walked past a thousand times (e.g. National Theatre, Southbank Centre). Evan was very knowledgeable and also very generous with his time. I recommend it to anybody who wants to see London from a different angle...

Superb, don't miss this! Evan has a deep knowledge of his subject and I gained a much better appreciation of the history, context, and ideals of Brutalism, perhaps the last truly visionary architecture we've had. He has a carefully crafted itinerary that takes one to the highlights in London and told great stories about the background of those remarkable structures. He has deep knowledge (Atlas Obscura and Explorabilia are great examples). HIGHLY recommended.

There are many tourist attractions in London but Brutalism buildings are real and hidden landmarks, Barbican is the best. The host is so considerate and professional that he explained very easily for me whose English is not good. And he generously gave me tips and helps for London trip. Eventhough you don't have a background about architecture and Brutalism, I highly recommend:)

Evan is an enthusiastic expert of Brutalist architecture. He’s a rare bird. This tour was comprehensive and covered many buildings around town. It was exciting to come up to a building and have it slowly reveal itself, and Evan is there with the history and background. Of course the jewel of the crown was the Barbican Estates. This is a long walk and Evan was very accommodating and shaved some time off by trying shortcuts. I really appreciate that attention to detail If you have any interest in Brutalism take this tour then go out and proselytize. It needs more supporters. This was a great tour!

I like Brutalism architecture more, thanks to Evan ! His passion for that type of architecture was catching, and he was very knowledgable. I learned a lot on this tour, and I particularly recommend it for people who know little/or dislike modern architecture because Evan may make you a fan.
