Au programme

Guests are welcomed by members of the Treak Cliff Team and visit our small museum to learn what Blue John Stone is, and to see antique items on display. This explains how the family came to be involved with the stone and some of the geological background and social history of the mineral itself. Then we may meet other family members and crafts people to experience how Blue John items are turned on a lathe in the professional private workshop. Guests will handle and learn what to look for when selecting Stone for particular projects., and compare the different colours and patterns of the Veins of Blue John Stone.
Next guests go into the stone storeroom to find pieces to work with, sorting, measuring and washing the mineral themselves : the craftsmen help with cutting , treating and grinding processes as needed.
In the Visitor Workshop guests begin shaping, grinding and smoothing the Blue John Stone . Whist waiting for materials to cool and glue to dry, guests can eat their packed lunch.
Afterwards guests return to the workshop, to continue the smoothing process until the surface of their projects is ready for polishing. Next, craftsmen supervise as guests use the buffing wheel to create a lovely shiny finish to the stone. Lastly, any bails, fittings or thread/cord are added to complete the projects guests take home.

Our expert for the day was John who thoroughly took us under his wing, he could not have been more accommodating or knowledgeable about his craft and the hills that harbor this beautiful natural substance. We felt completely at ease and entertained throughout the day as John told stories, played us an eclectic soundtrack of music and shared all manner of chatter while we chipped away, sanded and buffed our chosen rocks to perfection! We were able to choose the pieces we wished to work with from a huge selection and had complete freedom with how we wanted to shape it. We spent five hours creating our pieces, and it felt fantastic to be immersed in the world of Blue John. Fascinating heritage and history to boot. Absolutely loved it and thoroughly recommend to others, the quality of what we took away and the experience made this a really special and unique day at exceptional value.

A quality experience with lots of personality, an audiotour of the cave and lots of time in the workshop - working with local experts to pick, identify and shape a selection of jewellery items. Some great local knowledge and history of the workshop included by friendly experts.
