Au programme

I will take you on a guided tour through 330 millions years of geological history of the Castleton area, finding fossils, minerals and even some oil. The walk is around 7 miles long, following footpaths with some off-path sections.

Starting at the Vistor Center cafe in Castleton, we will walk through time and starting with the Carboniferous reefs up the beautiful Cave Dale and iconic Winnats Pass. Few people walk up the gorge where we can hunt for fossils of sea creatures in the reefs. Once we reach the top at Windy Knoll, you get a chance to be an explorationist and find some oil. This is perfect place to stop for a picnic; off the main foot path, shelter from any winds but still getting the views. After lunch, I shall lead you up to the huge landslip of Mam Tor, explaining it's formation. As I walk you back down into the village, we'll stop at a cave to hunt for some more fossils and look for the mineral unique to Castleon, Blue John.

I'm a professional geologist so through-out the walk I shall be passing on my passion for the outdoors, nature, environment and of course rocks in a fun and playful way. It's all about creating a story of the geolgical history using maps, rocks and your imagination! By the end of the day, you'll look at the landscape in a new light.

Gemma was so friendly and approachable. She was very naturally attuned and flexible to our needs during the tour. She made the subject of geology so fun, accessible and interesting. I can't believe how much ground we covered in terms of the incredible landscape and the subject. It was an unforgettable experience. Gemma was such a generous host and so enthusiastic and passionate about her subject it rubbed off on us. Thank you!
