Au programme

Our coastal exploration will begin at the large shelter near the beach. From the shelter, we will walk for 5 - 10 minutes along the shoreline of Greenwich Bay to Long Point. As we walk the coastline, I will describe how this area was formed from the movement of huge glaciers. After a short walk, we will reach Long Point. Here the coastline turns south and we enter Greenwich Cove, a sheltered coastal ecosystem perfect for exploring the shoreline and intertidal zone!

You will spend your time at Long Point exploring the coastal ecosystem. I will instruct you on safe ways to use nets to catch and handle the variety of aquatic creatures found here, including small fish, a variety of crabs, shellfish, coastal plants and seaweed, and many more. In addition, we will use binoculars to observe coastal birds. I will provide instruction on how to use field guides to identify the organisms found and describe how each organism is an important part of the coastal food web. During our exploration, I will provide insight into coastal ecology, the threats our coastline face, and ways we can help protect our shorelines.

After releasing any organisms we caught for observation, we will walk along the shoreline to return to the shelter where we started our journey.
Other things to note
This experience does involve wading through shallow water. You and your children may explore as deep as you wish, but I recommend to go no deeper than mid-thigh. All aquatic life that is collected must be returned at the end of the experience.

Greetings! I am excited to explore the coastline with you! I have been a scientist and professional educator for 18 years. I have taught at both the middle school and high school level, focusing on biology, environmental science, and ornithology. In addition, I have worked with a local nature program that led kids on beach walks in order to explore coastal ecology. I love helping kids explore nature, ask questions, and learn about their role in the natural world. As an environmental scientist, I worked on numerous coastal restoration projects to improve fish passage on streams and salt marsh restoration projects.

Destinations

Our experience takes place along the quiet shores of Greenwich Bay and Greenwich Cove, away from the busy beach at Goddard Park. Goddard Park is a 490 acre state park that features open fields, freshwater wetlands, forested uplands, and expansive shoreline. The coastal areas give expansive views of Greenwich Bay and Greenwich Cove.
