Au programme
Local artist Rich Garr leads this safe [masked, socially distant] open-air exploration through the Gowanus waterfront. He is a longtime area artist focusing on public art and community. This walking tour is a multi-sensory collage featuring art, and responding to the area's renowned history and current events.
Swoon, Mast, Guild, Wolf Tits and other funky street artists are typically featured. So are historical landmarks, architectural gems, hidden art spaces, and the work of anonymous "green guerillas" and graffiti writers. While old pollution lingers, so do new issues surrounding gentrification and re-zoning. The area is changing rapidly, and this tour features real-time information and insight. This route changes by the month, but always passes quirky art and recreational spaces (fencing, climbing, ax throwing, etc.). Local artists and businesses are always highlighted- classic pillars and young innovators alike.
We depart from Gowanus Corner at 400 4th Ave. (@ 6th St.) on the edge of Park Slope, very close to the F, G & R trains. The walk lasts about 1.5 hours.
The walk ends on a literal high, overlooking our footsteps and amidst unique food and drink options (where further discussion is encouraged). Tickets often sell out, and cannot be purchased after 8am on the morning of the walk... so try to get them early!

Rich Garr is a local interdisciplinary artist and insider. He's got the stories behind the walls of renowned street artists, anonymous graffiti writers and canal side "green guerillas." He has intimate knowledge of the our waterfront neighborhood- both institutions like the Old Stone House, and hidden alternative art spaces like Ortega y Gasset gallery.
Rich holds a NYC Tour Guide license tour guide and is CPR / First Aid certified. He is a Gowanus artist who studied art & history and worked at the Cleveland Museum teaching art to youth. Upon returning to NYC he worked at the Brooklyn Museum helping plan interdisciplinary programming. Freelancing followed, as did an art studio in Gowanus Brooklyn.

Rich was a great tour guide of Gowanus. We explored the neighborhood and not only learned about the history of the area but saw lots of cool art. Would definitely do another tour with Rich and would 10/10 recommend to both native New Yorkers and tourists.

Rich did a fantastic job leading the tour. It was a fun combination of local history, teachings about the basic lingo and history of graffiti and personal stories about artists. I really enjoyed the personal touch and the overall hidden treasures we discovered. It was a great value and an intimate New York experience that felt super authentic and not “touristy” (in fact all of us on the tour lived in New York and several people lived in the neighborhood)

I loved this walking tour! It was a great activity to get outdoors and explore in a safe way during the pandemic. Rich was very knowledgable about the neighborhood and knew the artwork and artists personally which made it more engaging. I left loving Brooklyn even more!

Really fun/unique experience learning about the lesser-known street-art scene in Gowanus. Rich obviously is passionate and knows a lot about the subject, and told stories about meeting some of the artists who have been on the scene for years. I'd definitely recommend the tour to anyone who wants to know more about the neighborhood.

Rich is very knowledgeable about graffiti, he has a personal passion about this topic, lots of connections with many of the artists whose works we saw, and he is an artist himself. He carries additional material on the artists and the topics. I live in the area and was still able to gleam a few things that I had missed. Rich was always open to questions and suggestions. We walked about a mile, though I personally would have loved to cover a bit more ground.
