We will meet at the parking lot of the John H Chaffee Nature Preserve. From parking, we will hike just under a mile to the shoreline. Along our walk, I will describe the fascinating colonial history of the site.
Once at the shoreline, we will use binoculars to view Harbor Seals that make Rome Point their winter home. If we are lucky, we may even see seals swimming and jumping out of the water in what can best be described as playing!
After 30 minutes of seal viewing, we will make our return hike to the parking area to conclude our experience. On the return hike, I will describe some of the important ecology of this large parcel of open space.

Greetings! I have been a scientist and professional educator for 18 years. I have taught at both the middle school and high school level, focusing on biology, environmental science, and ornithology. In addition, I have worked with a local nature program that led kids on beach walks in order to explore coastal ecology. I love exploring the amazing nature areas in my home state of Rhode Island, and I would love to share these experiences with you!
Destinations
Your experience takes place within the wooded John H Chafee Nature Preserve and along the shoreline of Narragansett Bay. The John H Chafee Nature Preserve is a pristine 200 acre property that includes mature upland forest, freshwater wetlands, and a rocky shoreline that is a favorite haul out area for the Harbor Seal, Phoca vitulina.
I highly recommend this excursion with Tim. He was extremely knowledgeable of the area and we had a blast scoping out the seals using his binoculars. He also had some great recommendations for other sights/sounds to check out during our stay. I can’t say enough good things about our experience with Tim!

Tim was a wonderful host and we were able to see (and hear!) so many seals on the hike! It was a lovely spot, with lots of seashell and rock hunting that my boys (ages 8 and 10) loved, and was totally worth going out in the cooler weather. Tim was easy to talk to and we learned a lot of the area, wildlife and beyond. This is a great activity and would recommend for anyone - from families with children to just adults.

Tim was a great guide! My sons (12 & 7), husband and I had a great time. We’re we’re nervous about taking the hiking in the snow but it turned out great. He was knowledgeable about the history of the area and although the harbor seals were far out he brought binoculars for better viewing.
