Au programme

We'll meet at my bike loaner HQ in the heart of Chicago's Wicker Park where we'll discuss the day's ride and get comfortable riding together. Then, I will lead you on a 4 hour custom bike ride through several Chicago neighborhoods. We'll ride under the historic "L" train, visit several of the city's neighborhoods (historically diverse and modernly hip), get a taste of Chicago's craft beer scene (if requested) and see Chicago's wide range of architectural styles and oddities, 1920s gangster related sites, great skyscraper views, movie locations, cluster of early 1900s movable bridges, and street art. No tour will be the same as it will be adjusted according to your responses to the pre-ride questionnaire.

** I have a small number of older model loaner bikes available for people who do not have one their own. If you prefer to rent newer bikes I can offer some suggestions.**

***As a general rule, unless the next day forecast is for all day thunderstorms, we wait until the morning of to make the final call to cancel. I don't normally cancel the ride if just a shower or two are forecasted. Sometimes we have coordinated with all riders to move the time up or back an hour to avoid bad weather. If a downpour does come during a ride we can wait it out over a snack or a brief look inside a place.***

****Private groups large than 4 contact me directly. We can set it up.**

Through cycling I combine so many of the things I love: history, geography, architecture, public art, beer, friends, and the wind in my ever decreasing hair.

A little more about me:
-Transplanted Oklahoman in Chicago for 15 years.
-History/French BA from the University of Oklahoma.
-Former Chicago Public Schools Teacher/Librarian.
-Worked in France, South Korea, and Japan and traveled in 30+ other countries.
-A year around cyclist who enjoys a city ride, a day through a forest preserve, and longer touring (Chicago-Mississippi River, Cleveland-Cincinnati, 7 days in the Kathmandu Valley).

Destinations

We will ride through several distinct neighborhoods that are not always included on Chicago tours. We'll start on the west side in Chicago's East Village near the popular Wicker Park/Bucktown neighborhoods. Depending on riders' responses to the pre-ride survey, we'll ride through hip Logan Square, the former "Polish Downtown", trendy Fulton market, traditionally African American Near South side, Mexian American Pilsen, Chinatown, and others.

The bike tour with Steve was better than I anticipated. My husband and I were able to explore the historic neighborhoods of Chicago, see beautiful architecture and street art, and enrich our knowledge of the history of the city. Highly recommend it!

This is my second tour with Steve. He is a friendly, knowledgeable host. Very accommodating and his biking experience creates a safe and comfortable ride. Great way to see and learn about many parts of Chicago!

Steve was an excellent guide! There was no possible way for us to see most of Chicago in 4 hours but he made it happen and did so as a professional. He made the tour personal and customized it to all of our interests. No script. Just an entertaining cycling history machine! His knowledge of the city stretched back to the late 1800s and he covered many sites that no longer exist. We really enjoyed his tour and getting the opportunity to ride vintage bikes around the town with him! Highly recommend to visitors and locals! Steve is Chicago’s Cycling Historian!!

We did a lot of great tours and activities in Chicago, but the tour with Steve was easily the best. Couldn’t ask for a kinder, more fun, or more thoughtful guide. The pre-tour survey hit all of the wide-ranging aspects for him to really customize the tour to not only our interests, but also our comfort level with urban biking, and getting us sized better for his selection of bikes. He was funny, informative, and great at navigating us safely around. Loved the extra thoughtful touches of taking quality candid pictures of us and sending us a map with annotations of some of the sights! All around awesome guy who’s awesome at what he does.

Steve is the man 😎 he showed us some awesome street art spots and gave us some Chicago history along the way. I would highly recommend hitting him up if you’re free on a sunny day.

I had few expectations since I’d never done a bike tour before. And, I was a little nervous about riding in the road in downtown Chicago, but Steve put me quickly at ease with his years of experience and a well thought out route which included quiet streets and some non-motorized paved paths (just gorgeous). I also learned quickly how bike friendly Chicago is with well-marked lanes and even some protective barriers. Not only did the short, interests survey Steve sent me help to inform our trip, but he was very flexible in adjusting to accommodate my desires along the way. The scenery, architecture, views, landscapes, gardens and stories were fantastic. Steve is extremely knowledgeable, easy-going and funny. Not only did I have a great time and get some exercise, but I have far deeper understanding and appreciation for Chicago’s history and changing cultural landscape. If I’m in the area, I’d love to ride with him again!
