Au programme

Wanna escape from Broadway and get your heart pumping? We'll explore three to five miles of pristine hiking trails at Radnor Lake, a welcomed oasis within Nashville city limits just seven miles south of downtown. Our easy to moderate hike will take us along the lake for optimum wildlife spotting. This hike will be good exercise but this is not a sprint. We'll be stopping frequently for wildlife viewing and interpretation. Discover abundant, up-close wildlife including white-tailed deer, turtles sunning on logs, wild turkey, owls, great blue heron, Canada Geese, and other migratory birds. The Radnor Lake area was not built for conservation reasons, but instead for industry. Many of the trail systems in Tennessee began as coal mining or logging efforts but Radnor Lake was created to provide water to the Louisville & Nashville Railroad for steam engines and livestock at nearby Radnor rail yards. You'll learn about the early days of Radnor Lake, past attempts to develop homes on the land, and its subsequent preservation. Each season at Radnor Lake State Natural Area offers hikers a unique, memorable nature hiking experience in Nashville.

Kelly

Since 2007 I've led Nashville Hiking Meetup, a 19,000+ member-strong outdoor club in Tennessee, and have personally hosted nearly 150 events over the years: hiking, camping, travel, and volunteering. I truly believe in the restorative power of nature, and sharing that experience with other people is my passion. I also strive to be a good steward of the trails by leading and working volunteer trail building and maintenance. 85% of my life I have lived in Nashville. By day I'm an eLearning developer and spend way too much time on screens, so I'm always happy to unplug and listen to the trees!

Là où vous les emmènerez

Meet at Visitor Center bike rack. Restrooms are inside the Center. We'll begin hiking around the picturesque lake, across to marshy areas where deer & waterfowl feed, then down Otter Creek Rd. We'll span the earthen dam, talk about its construction, & head down to creek level to visit the historic valve house. Last, cross the spillway bridge & hike back to visitor center. Majority of the trails are shaded, mulched paths; short areas are pavement.
