Au programme

We’ll warm up the body through a guided and flowing improvisation which means you’ll always have options for how to adapt the practice to meet your needs, including switching your video off for greater privacy and comfort. I’ll explain the difference between prescriptive movement versus descriptive movement and offer tools for exploring new ways of moving and perceiving to enliven your dancing. We’ll roll, slide, jump, crawl, and spiral. We'll go backwards and upside down. You might start to feel like a kid again :) This is a class where there are no rights and wrongs. My goal is to remind you that you are 3-dimensional and as we play we will break the rules about what we think we’re allowed to do. (Many times my students find themselves literally climbing the walls.)

After our warm up we’ll go into a “score,” an improv game structure working as a group or in pairs. This structure is an opportunity to integrate your new movement vocabulary and practice choice-making.

This class is ideal for groups and families as it gets everybody out of their heads, into their bodies. It can be adapted for any age (kids love it!) and any ability. I strongly believe that creativity and exercise are a perfect match so if you’re looking for a fun way to elevate your heart rate this experience is for you. For young kids an adult must be present.

I’m an award-winning choreographer who has been making and performing dance for over 18 years. I teach improvisation for Movement Research, based in NYC, one of the world’s leading laboratories for the investigation of dance and movement-based forms. I’ve been described by the press as inventive, mesmerizing, and a gifted comedian :) and have performed in the Netherlands, Japan, Singapore, Hungary, India, Russia, across the USA. I created the viral video “So You Think You Can’t Understand Contemporary Dance?,” a two-minute conversation with a five-year-old where we explain some key principles. Many of my performances incorporate amateur dances and I love helping people connect to their bodies and discover the delight of improvisation.

I liked the dancing with Gabrielle a lot. She made me more aware of different type of movements. Gabrielle was also very helpful as I had some technical sound problems and did the maximum that I could participate. Great experience.

I really enjoyed the body and mouvement explorations that Gabrielle proposed during the JoyTime session. I wasn't sure what to expect from a distance-danse/body exploration but it turned out just fantastic. The timing from warming up session, and the improvisation part was just perfect. During the session, we tried to explore several mouvements based on specific body/mouvement schema, and then contouring them (or not) in consciousness. Gabrielle also intervened timely during duo workout, orienting the dynamic and maintaining it during the whole session. It was FUN! Would sure love to take a trip to New York for a session with Gabrielle!

This experience is definitely something I would do again. Really appreciated how Gabi guided us into the body and how she offered many invitations to unleash our creativity, both individually and with the others in the group. I felt my horizons were expanded and left feeling energized and connected!

I enjoy Gabrielle's teaching: so joyful and creative. I appreciate her taking the time to learn how to utilize the video-conference format towards valuable artistic experiences. Also the social component has made me very happy. I feel invited to move and be myself.

What a great class! I'm not a profession dancer, but I feel like a much better dancer after this fun and thought-provoking class. Gabi gave us some great exercises to help us get into the flow while finding out how our bodies move best. I particularly appreciated the break out room where we did a very unique improvised duet. I also appreciated Gabi's philosophy that there are no "wrongs" in this type of dance, as well as the care and encouragement for newbies like me. Thanks.
