Au programme

After the introduction in the new reception building, guests enter the adjacent trail through the lattice-wooden gate, and soon begin the descent, dropping 100 m to the river trail, finally reaching the waterfall. Steps are sometimes steep, but have handrails. All of this takes place on trails passing through mostly undisturbed, beautiful tropical montane forest. Watch for birds and mammals. Guests have actually seen a puma from the trail! As the trail follows the river, guests cross three low bridges and sometimes walk on the gravel bars. At the waterfall, there is a plunge pool in which some guests like to immerse themselves - however, we warn you that at this elevation the water is chilly! Be sure to note the strangler fig roots covering the cliff on the right close to the waterfall. After passing the second bridge, you will see the result of a huge landslide that occurred as a result of too much rain from Tropical Storm Nate last year. At that time the trail was blocked by fallen trees, and the bridges were all washed away! Having said that, they say it was a 1000 year storm, and in any case the waterfall has more water during the May-December rainy season.
Other things to note
The steps down the canyon to the river are steep and not necessarily smooth. Any physical limitations that might affect walking safely down, or climbing up these many steps, must be kept in mind.

Dr. Richard LaVal, biologist with over 50 years professional experience and 40 years in Monteverde, co-hosting with daughter Kelly LaVal Wallace, born in Costa Rica and lived here all her life. I am founder of the Monteverde Conservation League, owner of the Childrens Rainforest. The Monteverde Waterfall has, of course, always been there, but was first made accessible by my son, Simon LaVal Wallace, several years ago. Late last year, Kelly and I decided to open the waterfall commercially and invested in many improvements to the trail and a modern reception building. We opened In March 2018.

Destinations

Our beautiful river canyon with its spectacular waterfall can be reached only on our trail. There is nothing else like it in the Monteverde area, although a small waterfall can be seen in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve. Even though our waterfall is in the middle of Monteverde and close to the main road, few people had seen it before the trail was constructed. Once in the river canyon, you will feel like you are in the midst of a wilderness.

this was a super cool and affordable experience! when I went, there was nobody on the trail so I had the entire waterfall to myself, and it felt great and relaxing! i do consider myself an experienced hiker who does a lot of tough hikes, so for myself the hike was on the easier side and only took me about 20 minutes, but Iould say the average hike would take maybe 30-35 minutes. the trail is in great shape and well marked. they do a great job of keeping the trail clean. it was chilly the day I went, but on a nice warm day, I'm sure swimming would be great fun!

The greeter on our arrival suggested returning later in the day for a picnic lunch. Great idea however one hike was great. Bring along you picnic on the first trip in. I think that would be a wonderful experience.

Really cool waterfall area. I'd definitely do it if you're into seeing as many wateralls as possible and because it's a great small activity to do in Costa Rica. It's not a long walk, but you're going down some steep steps. You don't need hiking boots, but it could get a little slippery at the end, closer to the waterfall.

The hike and the waterfall were beautiful. However, my friends and I were expecting a guided tour, but that was not that case. It is completely fine that this was not a guided tour, but that is what we were expecting. This was a nice hike, but it was on your own, not with a guide. Also, outside of the reception office we seen probably about 15 Coati's and a monkey!! Very cool.

This was a fun little stop after doing the Original Zipline (it’s only 5 minutes away). It’s a decent hike (far from handicap accessible) to this fun hidden spot. We probably spent the same amount of time hiking as checking out the cool water fall, not warm enough for us to consider swimming. There’s no tour, just follow the arrows/path, so just come and go as you please from 9-5. Richard and her daughter were great in communication.

There are a lot of questions about the host but it was an unguided tour so i would not know. The trail and waterfall were nice but if i would have known in advance i would not have paid 12 dollars for my daughter and me but i guess it fits the prices in Costa Rica.
