Au programme

We start off in downtown Northampton, a vibrant college town with a main street of historic buildings and plenty of unconventional style. It begins with an introduction to each other and our guide in Pulaski Park, we have our first taste of ripe seasonal produce that reflects the 300+ years of agriculture here and the very rich glacial soil that was once a lakebed. During the walking tour we will visit 6 different food venues including an artisanal bakery that sources and mills its grain locally, a restaurant that pickles and preserves local produce to use year round, a butcher that sources all of his meat within 50 miles, and taste local cider from one of the top three cider regions in the world. Questions are bound to arise about the many small independent businesses, the close knit food community and how so many cafes can exist in such a small city. We meet the producers themselves, who demonstrate their pride and passion for their craft. Throughout the tour guests will savor the food, but also the stories, details and encounters that reveal the uncommon character of this cultured city surrounded by farms.

I am a chef by trade, I trained and worked in France as well as cities across the US, specializing in gastronomic fare. Urban restaurants dream of having farm fresh ingredients grown a few miles away. I have lived in Northampton for 17 years and I love the region for its unequaled access to small farms and artisanal food producers. As someone who cooks every day, it is ideal and it attracts talented people who are dedicated to their craft, whether that is organic farming, baking or brewing craft beer. Each of the destinations are chosen by me for outstanding quality and commitment to sourcing local ingredients. I have developed relationships with each of the producers and makers on the tours and I provide guests the opportunity to have a dialogue, to hear their passion for what they do and what makes them unique.

Destinations

Main Street, the heart of downtown Northampton, lined with centuries old buildings, parks, hidden alleys and music venues is the center of our tour. The sidewalks are alive with students, musicians and locals, greeting regulars at their favorite cafe, browsing a locally owned bookshop or walking to work. Northampton has a bustling downtown where people of all walks are welcome.

This tour was wonderful. Came back a few months after my first go around, to experience it again. Wonderful host and thoughtful selections throughout. Can't wait to visit again

I really enjoyed the food tour with Deborah. It was the perfect introduction to Northampton, where my daughter recently moved. Deborah was a great host- very articulate, fun, and knowledgeable about the history of agriculture and food in Northampton/Pioneer Valley. She is a great ambassador for the city!

Deborah's tour is an incredibly thoughtful, detailed and well put together narrative of the Pioneer Valley, told through the food and agriculture of the region. From the historical farming cooperatives to the newest French pastry shop, she weaves together the people and story of Northampton and the Valley through its local product. We came away with a real sense of this beautiful area as well as a half-dozen restaurant recommendations. We also had the opportunity to sample food from around the valley and the town, hearing the stories of the farms, chefs and restaurateurs who built the food scene. Deborah's knowledge and experience as a chef also makes her an excellent source of insight on how dishes are created and which restaurants are doing something truly special in the area. Even the Pioneer Valley residents on our tour learned a lot from her, and as first time visitors to the area, this was the intro and overview we appreciated to give us a true sense of the area. We'll be back to visit the restaurants we didn't get to!

Deborah was personable and knowledgeable about the Pioneer Valley and its gastronomic and agricultural history. As well, the group of people who were also on the tour were pleasant and interesting to converse with. Finally, we enjoyed the food and drinks at the restaurants we visited. Thanks Deborah!

We moved to the area during the pandemic and with things opening back up, we were looking for an experience that would teach us about our new area. Deborah’s experience was exactly what we were looking for! The tour guide we had (not Deborah herself) was very knowledgeable and passionate about the area and was able to give us great recommendations for other local restaurants that fit our interests. This is a good tour for locals and visitors alike.

This was such a great experience! We truly loved getting to experience the local spots of Northampton, especially since we have never been to town. There was the perfect variety in our stops and you could tell so much time was put into curating the menu stops for each location to highlight different aspects of the local food scene. Getting to learn about the local economy and how it is so strongly sustained by local farms and food was incredibly interesting. The hosts were so kind and knowledgeable and just went to ensure every single detail was perfect. They truly made our day in Northampton so special. If you’re thinking of booking this tour I can’t suggest it enough! Would absolutely do it again when we come back to town.
