A day's walk on the Big Moor near Sheffield; you will see the remains of a Bronze Age village, amazing wildlife, and walk through the bottom of an old reservoir. The Big Moor is one of the most isolated parts of The Peak District and yet is only 10 miles from the centre of Sheffield. It just over 1000 feet above sea level. Open access to the land only became available recently; for many years this was a reservoir catchment area. The moor has become home to over 200 wild red deer and birds such as the curlew, buzzard, merlin and snipe. Man has ignored the area for centuries and as a result relics of the last 4000 years are everywhere; there are Bronze Age stone circles, remains of a Bronze Age village, burial mounds and medieval pack horse trails as well as more recent evidence of lead processing and millstone quarrying. The tour will start at 10.00a.m. and last about 5 - 6 hours although a shorter tour can be arranged. You will need to bring your own lunch and drinks and must have adequate clothing (waterproofs and spare warm clothing) and good boots. The terrain is difficult in places and at points there will be a need to jump across small streams. I really look forward to meeting you and helping to immerse you in the rich, historic heritage of this wonderful, wild and remote area. I have lived within a 10 minute drive of the Big Moor for over 30 years and have gathered a huge experience and knowledge of the area. I am a retired science teacher, a keen walker, photographer, natural historian and biologist and like to keep myself fit by cross country running. I can be found running across parts of the big moor most mornings! I am an experienced mountaineer and an assessor for the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme at gold level. I am very experienced at guiding large groups in wild country

The Big Moor is a unique place. Here you will feel really in touch with nature as we travel into the remote moorland with only wild red deer as company. You will also be taken back in time as we walk through bronze age settlements study stone circles and follow ancient pathways and medieval packhorse tracks marked out by ancient guide stoops.

The walk was not too arduous and Keith is very knowledgeable about the Moor, this history and surrounding landscape which was very interesting. We also saw the Red Deer and three magnificent stags. The pace was just right for us and we enjoyed their company for a fabulous day out on the Moor. Would highly recommend this experience

Such a beautiful walk!!! Keith is really passionate about nature and sharing with others what he knows about the area. He also helped me to understand how to navigate using map and compass. A truly wonderful day! I will definitely book another walk with him next time I visit the Peak District.

We had a great day exploring the beautiful Big Moors. We would not have been able to do this walk by ourselves without having Keith to guide us. Keith was friendly and knowledgeable. He was very easy to communicate with before the trip and he kindly accommodated us on a day that was suitable to us. It was a very hot day so we were thankful to Keith for thoughtfully bringing extra water for us. This walk was additionally special as we got to learn about Keith’s commendable contributions in building a school in Nepal. Highly recommend this walk to anyone wishing to explore the Big Moors.

We enjoyed a really interesting day with Keith and his wife, Gillian exploring the Big Moor. He was attentive to our needs and went at our pace, taking time to answer any questions we had. We were transported back in time to the Bronze Age with Keith’s easy style of story telling and his in depth knowledge of the area. We saw amazing views and the red deer were never far away. Thank you both for a memorable few hours with lots of friendly chat.

So glad I booked this walk. Keith and Gillian were so lovely. Keith’s knowledge of the moors and the wider area is just superb and you can tell he genuinely loves what he does. The weather was also superb which was an added bonus to an overall great day.
