Au programme

This is an Introductory Workshop in Shibori ~ a time to experiment and have fun!

You will dip fibers in an indigo vat, creating unique designs in blue patterns from your own Shibori experimentations. It is magic to watch indigo dye turn from yellow green to blue as it oxidizes!

First we will look at some sample Shibori fibers I have dyed. Using wood blocks, plexiglass shapes, and found objects, constrained with rubber bands & clamps, etc., you will make various patterns to resist the dye. A binder provides explanations and photos of some techniques.

First dye a piece cotton fabric to understand the process. Then choose 3 more pieces to dye. (Additional scoured items to dye can be purchased for a small fee.)

Wear clothes that you won't mind if some dye inadvertently splashes on, and shoes you won't mind getting wet. This is an outside activity, so dress appropriately in layers.

The class runs for 2 hours. If you wish to stay longer, to dye more items, the hourly fee is $40/per person/per hour.

Anything goes! Experiment!

Please email me if you would like to meet at ANOTHER TIME or DATE for class, rather than those listed.

Bring a PLASTIC BAG to take home your damp items, that will finish drying at home.

Everyone learns differently ~ so please ask questions, & request demonstrations that work for you. I am present the whole workshop to assist you.

Welcome to Still Water Bindery.

After a trip to Japan in 2012, I am enthralled with anything Indigo and the art of Shibori. I am still exploring the magic of Shibori Indigo Dyeing and will share my knowledge with you, so you can make some fabulous items to take home . . .

Destinations

We will use my old 1830's Vermont barn. The red barn is attached to the house, next to where you park. The dye vat and materials to make your Shibori designs are located in the barn.

After your pieces are dyed and ready to cure, we will hang them on a clothes line inside the red barn, or lay them on the grass lawn in front of the barn.

This was a great way to learn about indigo dying and try out lots of different techniques since she had lots of materials on-hand.

I was teaching a pre-college fashion program and took my group of high school students on this experience. Everything was amazing and we all had so much fun learning about the art of shibori and gaining new skills and experience. Patty was a lot of fun and guided us through the techniques and then we spent the rest of our time creating some amazing pieces! The location was blissful and we even extended our time as the group was so deeply into it! I would love to go back and I’m sure my students would too, given the chance! Thank you Patty!

We were a group of 5 adults ranging from done-some-creative-things to an experienced fiber artist. Patty provided a fun and immersive experience for everyone. She provided many different materials, fasteners and tools to experiment with various patterns and fabrics. Patty also provided things to dye! I recommend this experience for anyone who is a beginning dyer or an experienced one!

A+ Experience - 10/10! Our host Patty was everything we could ask for in this experience -- she was very knowledgeable, patient, helpful, flexible, open, easy going, friendly and warm. Everything we needed was provided. The sample work she had prepared was inspiring, and the setting was charming and beautiful. We drove 2 hours for this experience (each way!) and it was absolutely worth it. Can't wait to do it again - thank you, Patty!
