Au programme

Welcome aboard a large sailboat, a Downeaster 38, "Fred B. Wood"! Designed by renowned naval architect, Henry Morschlad, this Downeaster is in exceptionally good condition. Downeaster's are known as being stout and seaworthy bluewater cruisers. They can be found all over the globe. This experience is available for up to six guests! (Please note that I recently upgraded to a larger Downeaster 38 from an Ericson 27 which is shown in some of the photos!)

Your three-hour adventure starts at Jack London Square. The route will depend on wind conditions; however, our goal is to cross the bay to see the marvelous sites of South Beach Harbor (home of the SF Giants), the financial district, the bay bridge, and then Treasure Island. During the tour, you'll see amazing wildlife; including, flocks of pelicans, sea lions, and the occasional dolphin!

This is an active experience! I will review the basics of sailing (wind angle, general terms for operating the vessel, and rules of the road). You will take a turn at the helm (wheel), manage the sheets that control the sails, and raise and lower the sails. Naturally, you are also welcome to just sit back and enjoy the amazing views.

I am a USCG Licensed Captain. I have been a highly rated Airbnb host for six years and have been around boats my entire life. I have owned and operated many types of sail and powerboats. San Francisco Bay provides beautiful views and wildlife; including harbor seals, dolphins, and amazing birds. In addition, the microclimates in the bay mean you can go from boisterous conditions to nearly tropical calm in just minutes. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with guests!

Destinations

We'll depart from historic Jack London Square and (depending on wind conditions) begin our sail in the Oakland Estuary. We'll see the ramps where the Liberty Ships were built by Kaiser shipyards in WW II. As we head west we'll pass by the houseboats of Alameda. We'll then head west and with the wind on our beam cross the bay to see South Beach Harbor, the Bay Bridge, and Treasure Island before running downwind back to Jack London Square.

Wow! What an incredible experience! My wife and I are so grateful to Capt’n Dave for this memorable experience. Capt’n Dave picked us up from the JLS dock and walked us over to his beautiful boat. Once there he made us feel welcome and comfortable. The views were incredible and we were fortunate enough to see pelicans, sea lions, and dolphins! As Bay Area natives, we were thrilled to experience the Bay from a different perspective. We will definitely be back to see Capt’n Dave soon. Bring a cozy jacket, a bottle of champagne, and a fully charged camera because the views are spectacular!

We had great view of San Francisco skyline from the bay and got to see container ships in Oakland! Would recommend for both tourists and locals.

Sailing with David was amazing! My family had an amazing time, especially my son who learned about sailing firsthand and took a turn at the wheel. We appreciated the snacks and drinks provided. Highly recommend sailing with David.

This sailing experience was the most fun and most incredibly relaxing tour we’ve done. We got to see the Bay Area in a different perspective. Sailed under a massive bridge and got extremely close to Oracle Park. Captain Dave was an excellent host. He was well equipped for the sailing tour, knowledgeable about the sites, and had a wonderful sense of humor. He even baked cookies and made hot chocolate for everyone while sailing. Totally recommend this sailing tour!!!

Couldn’t have imagined a better way to spend time with my husband and in laws visiting for the weekend! The sailing route was beautiful, and we learned a bunch. Captain Dave truly made the experience - he was so knowledgeable, kind, and friendly and made us all feel right at home. Would give 10 stars if I could! Don’t miss out on this wonderful experience.
