Au programme

We will be birdwatching at a local birding (and eBird) Hotspot at Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, ME. The site borders the ocean and provides visitors first-hand experience with Northern New England's rocky coast. A paved walkway with excellent footing (although can be snowy and icy in winter) called the Marginal Way is elevated approximate 30 ft above sealevel and affords great viewing of ducks, grebes, loons, gulls, cormorants, and more.

I will lead you to view points for locating, observing, and identifying the diverse birds that Winter here. I will let you identify the birds yourself, or provide identification coaching, or answers depending on your preference. We will look for the handsome Harlequin Duck and we build a large list of species that we observe and this list will be submitted to the eBird database of bird observations for scientific usage. Other species include scoters, grebes, loons, gannets, and razorbills.

If you do not see a date and time fits your schedule, send an inquiry or request to me. I might be able to make the schedule work for you or your group. Other related AirBNB Experiences offered are Plum Island Birding (Newburyport, MA), Birding the Middlesex Fells (Boston, MA), and White Mountains Birding (N. Conway, NH)
Other things to note - This is a walking outdoor experience observing and identifying birds on the ocean.

In the mid-1990s, I moved to NH and worked as a bird observer in the White Mountain National Forest. I have lived in New Hampshire over 20 years and have explored most of the state. I hold university degrees in marine biology (BS), evolutionary biology (MS), and ecology (PhD). An avid hiker, birder, and experienced naturalist, I love to share my experience and knowledge with others.

At age 18, I started birding in my home area south-central PA, before birding for several years in south FL, LA, and now (age 55) New England. Globally, I've birded in Western US, Hawaii, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Bahamas, and Dom. Republic

In 2016, I started Open World Explorers, offering birding tours, where I serve as guide and coach to help birders add to their Bird Life List and to improve their bird ID skills and knowledge.

An excellent way to spend an afternoon! As a couple new to birding Steve was accessible, patient, willing answer all our questions and share his extensive knowledge. We highly recommend this outing and will definitely seek out another birding opportunity with Steve.

We had a great time spotting and learning about ducks and other birds along the Maine coastline; Stephen was a very knowledgeable and engaging host, and made it easy to appreciate and see these natural wonders.

This was a great experience! This was my first time bird watching and I wasn't sure how I would feel about. However, I left this experience with a brand new perspective on something I never thought I would be so interested in. Stephen was a great guide full of so much knowledge and passion. I would certainly recommend taking a tour with him. Amazingly friendly and kind. Would definitely do it again!

My husband and I booked the Marginal Way Birdwatch on a whim; we were visiting nearby Portland and thought it would be a fun experience. Steve was a terrific guide for bird watching novices. He explained everything well and was patient when teaching us how to use the binoculars. You can tell he's really passionate about birding. As an added bonus, he told us about the Black Hawk that has settled in Portland, so later in the week we went on our first solo bird-watching expedition! I would highly recommend this experience.
