Au programme

In this Photography Workshop, you'll be guided by a professional photographer through the historic Old Town San Diego, and learn how to take a beautifully composed portrait with whatever equipment you have available (phone, DSLR camera, etc.) We'll meet at an iconic part of Old Town, and from there we'll learn the different types of portraits, how to find the perfect lighting, and practice choosing the best compositions and angles. I will work with you 1-on-1 in our small class to make sure you understand the concepts and are having fun! Towards the end of class, we'll review your work, and I can advise you on what works best in your images, and how you can keep improving as as photographer. You'll leave with the knowledge of how to take a beautiful, professional portrait and wow your friends & family back home with your new skills. Other things to note: Bring comfortable walking shoes & a refillable water bottle! There is a water fountain to fill up. It will mostly likely be sunny & warm, but bring layers.

Anna is a great teacher! I needed some basic instructions on how to operate my new camera before I went on a big vacation and I can say because of her lessons, I captured some amazing memories and really appreciate her hands-on approach!

If you have never held a camera or if you’re one of the cool kids shooting your expensive camera on auto mode , and even if you consider yourself a pro. I would highly recommend you jump on this experience immediately. There’s something to learn for everyone. I went into this as a complete newbie to the world of photography. I used to just click and shoot whatever I thought looked nice. I own a camera with so many dials I didn’t even know what to do with it. Read the manual ? What do all those words even mean ? I went to this lesson a little anxious, however, Anna was super helpful!! We were able to go over the camera, all it’s settings, all the fun knobs and dials, and I was able to learn about it’s unique features and capabilities. Newly equipped with all this new found knowledge we went around Old Town looking for inspiration. We went over composition of pictures and how to manually adjust the camera to take the perfect picture. Constantly learning through trial and error. I just downloaded the pictures to my iPad and they look AMAZING. Anna has a wealth of knowledge and experience. She’s fantastic at explaining all the subtle nuances of photography clearly. She has a good eye for things and knows how calibrate the students skills accordingly. Don’t think about it. Just send it.

My wife bought me two private lessons with Anna for my birthday. We spoke via email where Anna asked me what I wanted to get out of each session. I told her my interests, which camera and lens I had, and we planned to meet at Balboa Park. On our first meeting we talked for a while about my camera and she quickly assessed my starting knowledge. This was great idea on her part as it allowed me to continue what I've learned instead of going back to the beginning. As we walked she let me decide what captured my eye instead of forcing me to take pictures of things I wasn't interested in. Each time, we would discuss the approach to taking the picture and she would offer her advice on how to make the photo better compositionally. She asked questions before each picture to make sure I understand why I made the settings I need to. Every time I saw something of interested we could go through the same routine before taking the pictures. This repetition enforced what I knew and helped me to come up with questions I didn't even knew I had until faced with a given situation. At the end she gave me a bit of homework to go out and take the pictures using what I've learned before out next appt. In our second meeting, we choose North Park to do some street photography. As before, we walked around and she let me choose my interest and offered advice on my pictures and answered all my questions. The time always flies by in our sessions. I could have walked around learning from her for hours!! She's a great teacher! I decided to continue my one on one lessons with her, although I know she also does group sessions as well. The third time I wanted to think more about landscape so we met at the harbor. As before, once I saw something I liked but wasn't sure how to set up the picture, we went through the same routine, thinking about the angle, the sunlight, the composition, ISO, aperture and shutter speed. I'm beginning to understand how much thought has to go into each picture and the questions I must ask myself as think about the picture I want to take. I was clear from our meetings that Anna has both the patience, passion, education and practical experience of photography. She understand the fundamentals and can explain, sometimes complicated, concepts in a language that is easy to understand and is helpful for people like me who know nothing about photography but are eager to learn. Her lessons make me realize that photography is an art that needs to be practiced on a regular basis while thinking about those fundamentals. Practice makes perfect! I plan on more sessions with Anna and highly recommend her as a teacher! In fact I'm already thinking of our next place to meet up!
