Au programme

We'll meet up in the most dramatic, central, section of Hadrian's Wall and hike along and then return north of this ancient frontier of the Roman Empire for about 7 kilometres (4 miles). [A longer, full day, hike is also available - see my other Experience]. We'll explore the natural and historic landscape of Wall country, learn how to interpret the shape of the countryside and gain insight into the processes and people that shaped it. You'll acquire basic skills that will help you begin to satisfy your curiosity about the natural landscapes all around us. The countryside around you will never seem the same again. The weather can be changeable and picking good weather days well in advance can be a challenge; so days additional to the calendar are available, please contact me to arrange a date. Pick up from local accommodation and stations possible.
Other things to note
You don't need to be a long distance hiker, just comfortable walking around 4 miles in undulating country. No degrees in geology or history needed, just natural curiosity. Other dates possible, message me.

I’m a northern boy, raised in Cumbria, did my degree in Newcastle. With interludes abroad and across the rest of the UK, I’ve been hiking, running and biking across the north of England for more than 50 years. So I’m local but also a professional geologist and trained Hadrian’s Wall guide. I surveyed parts of Northumberland and Cumbria for the British Geological Survey and retired as a director. I was a science consultant to the BBC for 6 landscape documentaries. Today I am a trustee of 3 northern environmental charities and lead hikes in Northumberland and the mountains of the Lake District.

Destinations

Thousands of people visit The Wall every year - I want to give small groups of people the opportunity to take a deeper and more insightful look. See the Wall from viewpoints few venture to, look at the whole landscape through a professional geologist's eyes. Walk and talk about how and why Hadrian built his Wall and explore the rich history of this countryside before and after the Roman Empire. And what its like being part of this community today

Our family are now Ian’s newest super fans! Incredible knowledge across the areas: geology, local flora and history (obvs specifically Hadrian’s Wall but so much broader than that too!). We did a 10km walk with our 9 year old son and it was perfectly paced. Ian he led in to see how he was doing, kept him engaged with great conversation and facts and had such a lovely way and humour along the whole walk. Us two adults were equally fascinated and educated. He’s a top guy. Cannot recommend him highly enough of you want to make magical new memories.

Brilliant afternoon! Ian has an extensive understanding of the history of the area, pre and post Wall as well as during Roman times, and his geology expertise means he can explain the why and how as well as the what. Lovely to hear the stories from someone so passionate about the area, and the history. He used to volunteer for English Heritage, so heaps of great info, and he tailored it all to our interest which was greatly appreciated. Pretty special to see the Wall from both sides too. We'll be contacting Ian for a tour of Housesteads fort when we are back. He was good enough to suggest and send a map of an amazing walk in the Lake District as well. Highly recommend :)

Ian is a super knowledgeable nice guy- the sort you might spend the evening having a pint with, he told me lots of things I didn’t know and I feel had gained a lot more than the average tour, Loads of things I might have missed and exercise just right on the walk!

This trip with Ian was way more than we expected it to be. He has a culmination of geological, historical and archeological knowledge. Ian has his way of making the trip fruitful for you, depending on what you need. He is kind and really helpful too. I was grateful for him to help me reach the point from where the trip starts, especially because it was a Sunday and half the transportations are closed.
