Au programme

We will discuss each participant's goal or where they are in their story. I will give a short discussion on children's books and how they have evolved through the years. We will discuss the importance of research and accuracy in details. We will look at books with many words, few words, no words and picture strips and why they work and discuss how each might've been presented in a different way. We will also look at board books, flip ups, flap books, half flaps, books with holes in their pages, and pictorial consequences. We will look at using visual aids, show examples of aids and why they are important. We will discuss plot, characters along with contemporary themes - social values, censorship etc. I will explain the mechanics of making a children's book and show examples of prototypes "called dummies" made by other artists and a series of original dummies from my own work and how they changed during the course of writing them. I provide index cards, explain how to size them, and the rules for a working layout. If time allows, each participant will be able to begin their own dummy considering the title, dedication pages etc. in class or have the materials to take home
Other things to note
This class will be an outdoor activity. No previous experience is necessary - just a love of bookmaking and an interest in the making of children's books.

Wonderful little workshop, inspired me to be creative and have fun with it. Susan was engaging; I am sure there are years more of things I could learn from her and she is so naturally willing to share! Her workshop is what brought me to the State of Maine for the first time -- the environment framed by her home and studio, and the studio itself, are 'what dreams are made of.'
