Au programme

We'll start on the river in front the silver circle sculpture and then weave around Brown University and College Hill, stopping to talk at lookouts, public art and private gardens while telling the story of Rhode Island's leading role in the slave trade of the 18th Century. Roger Williams called Rhode Island a "lively experiment." I'll do my best to report how that experiment worked out for Rhode Island and the nation. The walk is about miles and should take about 2 hours. It's hilly. So bring good shoes.

I was a newsman for 47 years: reporter, editor, columnist, webmaster. I now teach journalism at the University of Rhode Island. As a journalist, teacher, runner, reader of history and 18-year resident of Providence's Fox Point-College Hill neighborhood, I know the state's stories and hidden passages around Brown University and colonial Providence. Mine will be an amused and irreverent tour with time to indulge in the lives of the pious and the profane. By rights, Providence should be known as the place the American Revolution began, but the citizens had to keep it quiet. King George had a bounty on John Brown's head.

The Providence waterfront; John Brown's house on a hill; the scene of Buddy Cianci's first felony, the place where the Revolution started, but no one noticed; Brown University; H.P. Lovecraft Square; gardens tucked out of view; the library where Sarah Whitman dismissed Edgar Alan Poe; the site of the Snow Town race riot of 1831; the Roger Williams lookout; and the home of the colonial governor who tried to negotiate a peace with Britain.

Very knowledgeable. Well spoken, witty, and insightful. Well worth it. I loved the way he told stories. Learned public figures, architecture, history, commerce, art and more. Great tour, highly recommend

The breadth and depth of knowledge that Peter holds as well as his story-telling abilities were eye-opening and riveting to say the least. My husband is a RI native and I've been a Rhode Island resident and a PhD student for four years now, and only heard tidbits of information here and there about its unpublicized history. This tour may only be two hours, but it may rock you for another two days/weeks or even years. This walking tour is a must for anybody visiting Providence. It is an "improbable narrative" indeed but one that is necessary to encounter.

This was a wonderful tour that covered a lot of ground—physically, metaphorically, and historically. Peter really knows his stuff and weaves a great narrative of the history of Providence. (His depiction of a certain local politician was hilarious!) Highly recommended.

Peter was engaging and informative. Clearly very passionate about the history of Providence, with a particular angle focused on justice/injustice. I enjoyed the stories.

Peter was friendly and engaging. He obviously loves Providence and its history. He asked what brought me to town and incorporated it into the tour.

The walking tour with Peter was a delightful experience - our small group learned a lot about RI and his riveting tales kept us on our toes. I would recommend to those interested in getting a deep dive into the history of RI (including Brown U) that is not common knowledge.
