Au programme

Beautiful bikes, beautiful rides, and all our neighborhood secrets. On our tours we'll smell the roses, taste the doughnuts, ride across the bridges, and along the rivers; it's the best way to experience the diversity of culture, art, poetry, nature, parks and neighborhoods in Portland.

We believe it's all about the bike ride! Our approach is to spend more time riding, but lots of time stopping at gardens, art collectives, sculptures and beaches. We start in the inner Eastside neighborhoods, where we will fit you for an easy-to-ride bike and helmet, ready for a sweet 9-11 mile ride.

You'll visit a total of five of the city's quadrants, ride over two bridges, and along the Willamette River. We'll visit a number of almost-secret beaches, read poetry written in the sidewalks and rocks, see public art of every shape, color and texture. And have you tried some of the city's best doughnuts? (And no, we don't mean Voodoo.)

Portland is not just a city of seamless bicycle infrastructure and friendly relations between cyclists and motorists, but also a city of poets. Literally and figuratively, our bike ride is a poem--a series of poems--to our city. We'll read poetry written on murals, in sidewalks, and carved in rocks. There is, too, the whirling poetry of wheels on pavement, the sweet suspension of effort that is cycling on the quiet streets and pathways in this place we love.
Other things to note
Portland mornings are cool -- bring layers! We have raingear to borrow; or (Sept - June) bring your favorite rainjacket. We wear everyday clothes to ride our bikes, but it's easier in comfortable footwear, with no long skirts or wide legged pants. Minimal bike experience is ok; none, is not.

I'm a published writer of essays and professional storyteller, and the narratives around which our tours are based was a collaboration between us, writers and route designers, as a movable narrative, what we call place-based storytelling.

When we create a ride, it is one we as story creators develop out of the places we know intimately and love so we are bursting to share them; and also includes elements that together make up not just the story of Portland, but also the beauty of biking in what one guest called "the most pleasant urban cycling experience" there is.

Destinations

We start at our shop at Around Portland Tours, 833 SE Main #120, and fit you for the bicycle & helmet perfect for you.

We head into a pretty residential neighborhood, to our favorite rose garden, into an art-heavy industrial district, across the sexy Tilikum Bridge, and onto Portland's waterfront. From there, it's a trip along the river, before we head over another bridge back to our shop.

Awesome tour with Anna as the guide :) super knowledgeable. The biking itself is not super strenuous, only a couple hills (2.5 to be precise) for those wondering. Amazing way to see the city.

Ana was a superb host and guide. We got to know so much about Portland and to see places we would never have discovered on our own. Great ride, great value, great fun!

Dustin was our tour guide for the day and was very helpful and informative. He provided biking rights and rules, which was very helpful since we were not from the area. He also made sure we were all comfortable with the bikes before heading out, and even let us swap for an entire new bike when one felt slightly off/noisy. The bike tour was very fun and scenic. Dustin brought additional water for us, ensured we were all comfortable at the pace we were going, and answered any additional questions we had. It felt like he had been doing these tours for years, despite doing it for only 2 months, and we were happy to have biked around Portland with him.

What a great way to see Portland on a bike!! Anna was super friendly and very engaging. We stopped at a local coffee shop and then a delicious ice creamery. The ride was smooth and safe. No hills, not too fast. Just the right amount of biking for a healthy 3 hour trip. Would highly recommend. The tour concludes near 2-3 breweries as well!

My tour guide was Anna and she was great! She knew the history of the area pretty well, explained bike safety very clearly, and was very personable.
