La Casetta at San Cristoforo, a handsomely restored 18th century cottage with glorious country views, provides a perfect setting for a memorable holiday for up to four, between Urbino and Gubbio.

Le logement

Upstairs are two spacious bedrooms (one with a large double bed, one with twin beds) and two bathrooms (one en suite with twin bedded room). Downstairs are a sitting room and a country kitchen, both opening on a private south-facing garden all’inglese and paved terrace with a pergola (photograph below) where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the nearby high mountains as you sip your prosecco.

Behind the cottage stand the former presbytery and chapel (recently converted to make our second holiday rental property) that were once the heart of the 13th century rural parish of San Cristoforo.

The orientation of the cottage and its garden, both facing away from the chapel and the main house, assures your privacy.

The accommodation:
The kitchen of La Casetta is fully equipped with utensils and crockery, together with a supply of basic cooking ingredients (salt, peppercorns, vinegar, chillies, etc., and fresh herbs in the garden). There is a large fridge with a separate freezer compartment and a high-quality Smeg gas oven and hob. There are plenty of good food shops and small supermarkets in nearby Cagli. We're also happy to provide you with any ingredients from our own kitchen - juniper berries, bicarbonate of soda, bay leaves, cloves, etc - that you may not consider worth buying in any quantity. We can also lend you such things as cake tins, snail dishes, chicken bricks or sweetcorn forks should you really need them.

We have avoided the temptation to pack in beds, and despite the large floor area of La Casetta (around 100 sq.mts./1,075 sq.ft.), we have limited sleeping to the two spacious bedrooms. One has a generous double bed, while the other has two proper single beds. All the mattresses are firm and of a high quality.

The beds will already be made up for you with 100% scratchy nylon sheets (just joking - the sheets are cotton...) and duvets. Each bedroom has hanging space and a chest of drawers.

The two bathrooms, both with showers, are supplied with unlimited hot water. The twin-bedded room has its bathroom en suite.

The cottage has full gas central heating for colder months and a working fireplace in the sitting room for which we supply logs.

La Casetta has free wireless (or wired) 2 MB broadband.

There is a washing machine in the main house which you are welcome to use whenever you want.

The cottage is equipped with a stereo that plays CDs and tapes; it also has an AUX IN so you can play your device through it. You are welcome to borrow CD’s from our eclectic collection. You are also welcome to borrow books from our well-stocked library.

If you are staying for more than a week, we will change your bed linen at a time which is convenient to you.

We provide outdoor table and chairs on the terrace, sun loungers and a swinging chair in the garden as well as a barbecue.

La Casetta and La Pieve together with the main house - once the canonica, or presbytery - make up San Cristoforo, the former heart of a 13th century rural parish.

The buildings stand on a small hillock in outstanding countryside with splendid views in every direction. To the front lie fields and woodland that lead the eye to the high peaks of Monte Catria, while to the sides are the tree-clad slopes of a small river valley and our vineyard and views of rolling hills as far as the horizon.

Le Marche (sometimes known as the Marches in English) form the Adriatic seaboard of central Italy. Despite splendid countryside, noble towns and welcoming people, the region has yet to be discovered by the tourists who crowd out neighbouring Tuscany and Umbria.

Accès des voyageurs

The price covers everything, including cleaning at the end of your stay. We do not ask for any “security deposit” preferring to trust that guests will not trash the furniture.

We offer free wireless broadband access, and guests are welcome to use the washing machine in the main house at any time and borrow music, DVDs and books from our extensive library.

Échanges avec les voyageurs

San Cristoforo is home to Richard Dixon and Peter Greene, former Londoners who have lived and worked here full-time for almost 30 years.

They are always on hand to give you advice and help to make the most of your stay. As writers of Italian guide books and travel web sites, they can also give you plenty of useful information on what to see and do while you’re here. But they are also quite happy to be invisible if that’s what you prefer.

My partner, Richard Dixon, and I are former Londoners who have lived and worked in a historic "canonica", or priest's house, near the medieval town of Cagli in the northern Marche since 1988.

We rent out the old chapel and workers' cottage that used to make up the rural parish church of San Cristoforo, and are always on hand to give you advice and help to make the most of your stay.

As writers of Italian guide books and travel web sites, we can also give you plenty of useful information on what to see and do while you're here. But we are also quite happy to be invisible if that's what you prefer.
