If an historic, 19th c. Cornish Art Colony cottage nestled in the woods is to your liking, the first floor Maxfield Parrish Suite in our 1766 cottage is for you! The Maxfield Parrish retains the rustic charm amid pastoral beauty that has drawn travelers, artists, intellectuals and writers to our region for over 200 years. Exposed beams, 1766 & 1888 detailing, French windows, and updated utilities combine in this cozy Victorian cottage, with skiing, historic sites & arts offerings all nearby.

Le logement
This spacious suite of four rooms and a large porch combines authentic, cottage architecture from 1766 and 1888 with updated utilities. This is the large first floor of the 1766 building; there is a 2-room Artist's Loft BnB above it. There is easy access to the BnB from Rte 12 A, which is just beyond the pines on the outer edge of the front lawn of the property. The living room is adjacent to the open kitchen with dining area. The master bedroom has a queen-size bed, chaise lounge, large closet and bay window seat. The study/second bedroom with queen-size futon bed, comfy reading chair and writing desk opens through 1888 French doors to the large porch looking out onto Mt Ascutney. The bathroom has a shower over a claw-foot tub among its amenities. This BnB is fully stocked with everything you need to have a relaxing visit, and more: books, games, television-as-monitor, DVD player, and high-speed internet.

This is an authentic 1766 building, which you will quickly notice with, e.g., window jambs, gunstock corners, original beams, 1766 corner cupboard in the Master bedroom. The space has the quirks of its actual age in window jambs and other details. If you'd like a modern copy of an actual 1766 building, this is not the place for you!

Accès des voyageurs
Guests are welcome to cross-country ski and hike on our property; there are other ski an d hiking trails nearby. Particularly lovely is a road and then path through the woods on the dirt road adjacent to our entrance, which wends by cornfields and the Connecticut River. We provide maps and visiting materials, including recommendations from us for good places to visit, shop, dine, and join in our Upper Valley arts' scene (which is extensive!). Your host offers taking you as her guests to the spectacular Augustus Saint Gaudens National Historic Site across the road. We also provide a chair and shade umbrella for those who want to sit further out on the lawns and read, write, or sketch, in the tradition of the summer art colony that began here in the 19th C.

Autres points à prendre en note
Guests may have one dog, if approved, in their BnB. One dog is the MAXIMUM. The dog must be well-trained and housebroken, and guests must pick up their solid dog waste anywhere on the property. There is a dirt road adjacent where picking up is not necessary.

The many beautiful historic sites in our region, from Saint Gaudens' National Historic Site to Billings Farm & Museum, the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller estate, AVA Art Gallery and Center, Opera North, Dartmouth College, American Precision Museum, and sumptuous farmers' stands are available daily. There are town band concerts, talented and lively shows at the New London Barn Playhouse, concerts in every genre, special historic programs throughout the spring, summer and fall seasons. On the hot days in summer, the swimming areas of Hartland dam and Wilder dam in Vermont are a short distance away, and are delightful spots along the Connecticut River. Cornish also has a boat dock on the CT River for kayaks or canoes, and this is just south of our property. The excellent skiing areas on Mt. Sunapee are thirty minutes southwest.

I'm a writer and a journalist, and publish an arts' and events' monthly in our region. I have abiding interests in art history, theatre, music, literature and history. I have just completed two books on the Cornish Art Colony artist Maxfield Parrish that I have written with his grand-daughter. I enjoy meeting new people, and traveling! I also teach youth Shakespeare classes, including directing a full production each summer in our barn theatre, and I teach literature and art history at Dartmouth in the OSHER program. I have a little pug named Lizzie.
