Pallanza, Piedmont, Italie

If you are up for tourism, visit the islands Borromeo, especially Isola dei Pescatori if you like little islands with charm and good restaurants in the sun, walk in nature in Valgrande national park, cycle around the lake or slowly walk to Villa Taranto to enjoy amazing lotus flowers, water lilies and the tropical queen: the stately Victoria cruziana.

Lake Maggiore is surrounded by mountains offering a variety of landscapes which has few equals in the world. Within a radius of 50 km the green hills around the lake give way to glaciers and peaks of over 4,000 metres. Soaring above the other mountains is the massif of Monte Rosa, the second highest in the Alps at an altitude of 4,633 metres.

30 minutes drive from the house is one of the entrances to the Val Grande National Park, the most extensive wild area in the Alps. The park offers a wealth of trails for hikes of one or more days in a setting of unspoiled nature.

Winter sports come into their own in the snowy season. The Lake Maggiore tourist area includes several ski resorts - Macugnaga, San Domenico, Domobianca, Val Formazza, Alpe Devero, Valle Vigezzo – which are a paradise for lovers of Alpine and Nordic skiing, ski mountaineering, snowboarding and snowshoeing. With snow lying late into the spring, the plateau of Riale in the upper Formazza valley is a centre of Nordic ski training for national teams from many parts of the world.
And if you would like to ski with a view of the lake, don’t miss an excursion to the top of Mottarone, the mountain above Stresa (cable car service from Stresa).

From a travelling website:

"The elegant town of Pallanza looks out over Lake Maggiore from its privileged situation on the Borromean Gulf. Pallanza and Intra are the two main centres of the municipality of Verbania.

The historic centre is criss-crossed by ancient streets and squares lined with fine, substantial period buildings with ornamental doorways, porticoes, and capitals. Pallanza’s lakefront is one of the finest on Lake Maggiore; a walk along its promenade with the lake and the Borromean Islands on one side and colourful facades, porticoes, flowered balconies, terraces and cafés on the other is a highly agreeable experience. Bustling with visitors through the day and well into the evening, this is the main meeting place of the town.

Towards the end of Viale Azari away from the lake stands the beautiful Church of Madonna di Campagna (Our Lady of the Countryside), a Romanesque basilica with 16th century features.

In the past the town was divided into the two medieval nuclei of “ Villa” and “Piazza”.

Villa, on the slopes of the lovely Castagnola Hill, from which there are superb views of the lake, is graced by the Villa and the Church of San Remigio. Piazza includes the lower part of the town near the lake. Here the most characteristic buildings are the Church of San Leonardo with its fine, broad flight of shallow steps, the 19th century Town Hall, whose portico is made of 32 pillars in pink Baveno granite, and Villa Giulia, a superb 19th century mansion built in 1847 by Bernardino Branca (the creator of the amaro Fernet-Branca), and used all year for exhibitions and other events.

Other buildings gracing the town have become important art centres, such as Palazzo Viani-Dugnani, built between the 17th and 18th centuries and which has housed the Museo del Paesaggio (Landscape Museum) since 1909. Palazzo Biumi-Innocenti, a building of medieval origin, today houses the folk piety section of the Museo del Paesaggio.

A bus called "Alibus" connects the town of Pallanza with Milano Malpensa Airport ( phone booking needed). The bus stop is located ten minutes walking from the house.
The easiest way to enjoy the lake surroundings is to rent a car at the airport and park nearby the house in free street car parking spots. From a travelling website:

I am from Italy, I love travelling to experience, possibly off the beaten track. I am a very social person, I have a keen interest in international affairs, development, other cultures and photography. I really like my job and when I am not working, I need to experience new cultures, learn, meet. Life is short and I realise we should not waste any single bite of it. Philosophy: Holstee manifesto: Do what you love and do it often. If you don €™t like something, CHANGE it. If you don €™t like your job, QUIT. If you don t have enough time, stop doing stuff you don't like. If you are looking for the love of your life, stop; She will be waiting for you when you start doing things you LOVE. Stop over analysing, life is SIMPLE. When you eat, appreciate EVERY last bite. Open your mind to NEW things and NEW people. TRAVEL often; getting LOST will help to FIND yourself. Some opportunities only come once, SEIZE them. Life is about the people you meet and the things you create with them, so go out and start CREATING. Life is short. Live your DREAM and share your passion.
