Le logement

Our home called ‘Cata Odata’, it serves as a communal place to learn and play for artists and creative people especially those who resides in Bali and East Java. We run an active art gallery, a shared studio, and a residence.
Other than myself, there are 4 more persons who live permanently in Cata Odata. Those are my grandma who is a great cook for us, my partner, Kenyut who is an artist, Ajeng and Merio who are our friends and communication management team.

We live in a semi open plan house nestled in a busy village of Penestanan Kelod, 12 minutes walking-distance to Ubud city centre. Surrounded by some villas, big trees, paddy fields, small streams, and a Pura (Bali Hinduism temple) across the street. If you are lucky, witness and know the custom closer when they have ceremony in special date and occasion at the temple.

While you are staying here..

This special room offers our affordable collection as well as wearable arts or craft that made by our artists friend.
The gallery is open from Monday to Saturday, at 10AM - 7PM WITA. (Currently our Cata Odata website is under maintenance. Visit our (URL HIDDEN) for reference)

2nd floor --> THE RESIDENCE (rooms, library, and kitchen)

This is the space where we live, study and rest. There are total 4 bedrooms where me and my grandma are using the main room. 2 other rooms open for anyone who’d like to stay with us; 1 twin room and 1 queen room.
Please note that we also run an international artist residence program, so it is normal if you meet with a highly creative and quirky minds in their full-on mode while staying in Cata Odata.
We have mini library with range of genre across the art, history, and various graphic novels mostly in English and Indonesian. Feel free to ask us for recommendation and please to inform us before pick it up especially on our rare collections.
Kitchen is being shared but not during the peak time that is 9 AM to 1 PM where grandma require to use the whole kitchen to feed Cata Odata permanent residence. Please use the stove considerably for light cooking only. If you need to store your grocery, ask for a plastic container (40 x 30 x 10 cm) from us so it won’t be mixed up with others. Unfortunately, we have to stop the access of using the kitchen for those who does not meet our cleanliness standard.

3rd floor -- > ROOFTOP

We have 3 lovely dogs live in these spacious area. However, as our building is quite old, we have to limit the access to the roof top area (though it’s very airy and beautiful here)

Ground floor --> STUDIO AND LITTLE GARDEN by the stream

This is where all the artists and other creative people playing/working together. If you are inspired and want to use this space for your sudden project, please ask us about the availability. After all, no one likes to work in an overcrowded studio.

Currently we are expanding our library to a wooden room right above the studio which connected to a giant hammock. Occasionally, we use as a movie-screening room. On the hammock. Yes! However, for safety reason, this fun space is best for 5-6 adults only.

Échanges avec les voyageurs

The only area that has a total privacy is your own bedroom. You will often meet and greet with the others especially us in any area of the house. Most of the time, we will be here and are gladly to share any information regarding your stay in Bali in our capacity and capability.

Autres remarques

Keep in mind that we are in the middle of a village where all its residents must carry out their daily activities. It is not strange if sometimes you hear knocking hammers, motorbike passing by, barking dogs, howling dogs (ours are huskies), sound of gamelan from the temple, ceremonies, parades, villagers returning from paddy field, people hang our in coffee stall next door, fighting roosters competition, and even the sound of pigs being sacrificed for ceremonial purposes. All of those mentioned above alongside our artistic endeavour will become your honest cultural experience if you stay with us :)

This is a very unique home and art space in Ubud. Ratna was very kind in welcoming me, arranging transport and helping me get situated. The room is clean and eclectic, and the fan makes the room very cool at night. Sleep was peaceful and cozy!

This is a very cool opportunity to live among the art that makes Ubud famous. It's half hour walk to the center, and across the street from an active temple. The bed is very hard, and there is no AC, but it's clean and hospitable.

Staying at Cata Odata was a truly amazing experience for me. From the first moment on everyone at the house was welcoming and made me feel at home. The house is amazing it is actually more like a huge playground with the gallery, the studio the best hammock i have ever seen and a big open kitchen and living room. The room was also amazing with a private bathroom, nice view on greenery and beautiful decor with books and artworks. The location of the place is also really good if you want to escape the main tourist area of Ubud but still be close to it. It is located in a very cute part of Penestanan where you still get to enjoy the local life and walk to the most beautiful ricefields which are just behind the house. It is also easy to walk to the main places in Ubud and great restaurants and cafes are also easy to reach. With the motorbike or bicycle its even easier to get anywhere from there. The best ting about the place - apart from the fact that it is one of the most amazing houses where there is so much to do that it never gets boring even if you are forced to stay inside on rainy days - is the people living there! You will be able to join them on their visits to the many local artists in the area that they know - an experience that is really unique and not part of the standard tourist programme. We also went to several exhibitons and openings that featured great Balinese artists. So if you are looking to learn something about what is going on in contemporary culture in Bali this is the right place to experience it. I got so much interesting and inspiring input during my stay and I can more than recommend staying here - if this is something you are looking for. A big thanks to Kenyut, Ajeng, Merio and Grandma :) for making this experience so special! Unfortunately I did not get to meet Ratna in person during my stay as she was out of town but the communication with her was always easy and she helped me with organising my arrival. I will be back for sure!
