This beautiful Mediterranean styled cottage has been our home away from home for ages. Set on the beach on Africa's "Lake of Stars", it is the best place to relax and unwind.
For couples, laze around in the sun sipping on your favorite brew. For families, spend some quality time with your kids playing outdoor games, or board games inside. Also suits Corporate Management get togethers for planning and workshops.
Fans all round, a/c all round, generator to run the basics, staff, lots of space.
Staff. There is a cook assistant. He can cover the basics, salads, breakfasts, rice, chips, roasts, potato bakes, but don't ask him to make a lasagne or similar. Feel free to teach him something new - he is a keen learner.
Also a head of staff who looks after the place, a gardener who assists cleaning inside, and three night watchmen.
Lots of freezer and fridge space, a dedicated drinks fridge, a water cooler accommodating the 20L containers - please take your own. Braai (barbeque) is available on request.
There is a small jacuzzi style (not heated) sitting pool, overflows into smallish single level (1.5m deep) main pool (ONLY LADDER STAIRS), DSTV, board games, beach toys, air conditioning in all bedrooms, all beds have mozzie nets, generator available for power outages (please supply your own diesel in container provided).
In Maldeco nearby, you have access to a general store (Peoples) for last minute items you forgot or have run out of. In the trading centre of Makawa nearby, there is a shop selling imported drinks (ask the staff -they know about it), and on the way to Maldeco there is a filling station.
Nearby is Club Makakola Retreat, offering a par 3 golf course and Spa treatments - will likely cost you to get in due to exclusivity of this resort. Almost next door is Sun n Sand Resort - lovely kids play areas including machine rides (like in a shopping centre coin feed), jumping castles, trampolines, and even an aeroplane hydraulic merry go round like at the fun fair, plus a shallow adventure pool. It will cost entry though per head.
If you have a boat, there is a slipway available (reccommend 19ft hulls and under) and the staff know what to do. If you dont know the area, I would recommend taking someone who knows the area with you (our boat boy) for your first trip to the Island, there are 2 sets of rocks that are dangerous, on the north east of the island and the south west, this one particularly dangerous as it is in deep water, appears out of nowhere.
Behind the cottage is a nice pub on the hill, great for sunsets or just getting a birds eye view of the area.
Accès des voyageurs
You will have access to the whole cottage except one store room where we keep our stuff, set out as follows:
Main bedroom - large double bed with en suite bathroom (shower, bath, toilet), ample cupboard space, dressing table, ceiling fan, a/c, space for a baby camp cot or two (supply your own).
Along the passage to the Main Bedroom is the Kids Bunk room, with 2 bunk beds in, limited cupboard space, but fan and a/c, generally used for kids. Wouldn't recommend adults on the top bunks.
On the RHS of the main area are three other rooms.
At the far end of the passage is the old main bedroom (Passage Bedroom 3). This has a double bed, ample cupboard space, en suite bathroom (combo bath and shower, toilet), ceiling fan and a/c.
Next room is the Passage Bedroom 2 (Family). Has a double bed and a bunk bed, cupboard space, fans and a/c. Serviced by passage toilet and separate shower & basin.
First room down the passage (Passage Bedroom 1) from the lounge is fairly small with double bed, ceiling fan and a/c. Also serviced by the passage toilet and shower.
Outside Guest Cottage is large, has a double bed, 2 singles that can be adapted into either single bunk or can add further bunks in there. En Suite bathroom with shower, bath, basin and toilet. Ample cupboard space, ceiling fan and a/c. Not being part of the main cottage it is not connected to the generator. Suited to young families needing the quiet for little ones while main cottage is noisy with older kids.
The central area is open plan. A sunken lounge where you can watch TV, adjoining Dining Room, and both open directly onto the khonde. The khonde look over the swimming pool towards the beach. Adjoining the pool in one corner is a seating pool (not heated) where kids can play or adults can sit and enjoy a frosty or two. The fence cutting off the khonde from the seating pool is removable.
At the door from the lounge to the khonde is a cupboard with all the cards & board games. There should also be a large bin with beach toys for kids to play with.
There is a foot shower off the khonde to wash the sand off your feet before you enter the house or the pool.
The kitchen is large, plenty fridge and freezer space, central counter with prep sink, both electric & gas stove/ovens. There is a 5KVa generator available for power cuts, you will need to fill up fuel sometimes as it evaporates with the heat over time. This generator is enough to run lights, the fridges/freezers, and a couple of fans - NOT any stoves, microwave, aircons or geysers. The staff know what it can and can't run.
The beach area, whilst officially being public land, is for your use. People may pass across but may not stop and use it as their own. You have every right to ask the staff to get them to move on.
