Black Bear Cabin offers a clean, charming and comfortable place to stay while you explore the Stanislaus National Forest and high country Wilderness areas. We are located conveniently just off Hwy 108 with excellent year round access, barring winter storm road closures. The cabin is family friendly with a fenced yard and also pet friendly for clean well behaved, fully house trained dogs. We also welcome singles, couples and small groups of friends. Restaurants and food stores are nearby.
Black Bear Cabin is an old structure with previous lives: once a doughnut shop and long ago a logging office. Before our renovation it was the office for the old Sonora Pass Resort, which was a motel and restaurant/bar. Very poorly taken care of for many years, we've started a long renovation to save this lovely place and the cabin was our first remodel. Since then the restaurant has been remodeled into our beautiful home. We plan to begin the next stage soon.
The cabin has two sort of small bedrooms; one with a queen bed, table and chair, and the other with two twin beds, a dresser, and a rocking chair. The main room has the kitchen, a dining table that accommodates six, a futon, an upholstered rocking chair and a love seat with a large matching ottoman. Very cozy. The bathroom is accessed through the queen bedroom and has a shower and toilet.
The heat is provided by a free standing propane fireplace that is thermostat controlled. The cabin can be cooled with the swamp cooler in the main room. We provide a child gate if requested.
The floors are bamboo which is easy to clean and wipe up snow puddles. The covered front porch is a good place to take off boots and towel off a snowy dog. There is a fence around a small front yard that is a safe place for small children and pets.

The parking area is big and we invite guests to park anywhere in that space. For loading and unloading guests may pull up to the several steps that lead to the cabin. We own all the property surrounding the 1 acre pond and guests are welcome to any part of that and the small boat dock. Fishing is allowed catch and release with crimped hooks. You must carry a license. The row boat is also available but we are missing the oars and currently have paddles. (we're looking for oars). The large meadow is also ours and guests are welcome there as well. Our property includes the dirt road behind the cabin.
The Sonora Pass Road is about 300' from the cabin and road noise can be heard if the windows are open. At night it is silent, and after Labor Day and before Memorial Day there is a noticeable difference. Only two guests have mentioned this to us. Most guests love the access.

We prefer a phone call if you need assistance. If you see us around outdoors of course we are available to assist you at any time. Just ask.
If the pond is frozen please don't just go out there to slide around without having us test the depth of the ice. We'll drill a hole in it to make sure it's thick enough to walk on.
There is an in ground pool on the property which is not listed as an amenity due to the rough condition of the bottom. We use it primarily as a reservoir for fire protection.
Some people are surprised that there is daytime road noise. Summer is busy, others seasons not so much.
