Get away from stress of modern life by glamping in total serenity on a 70 acre nature reserve.

The bunkie is VERY BASIC but it has all you need to camp comfortably:

- gas camping stove (when too hot to have the range fired up)
- gas fridge (ice for G&T)

- mezzanine for 2 sleeping bags

It is not for people who object to using an out-house.
It is not for people who need a TV or video games.
It is not for people who are bored by nature.

Above all else it is a sanctuary not only for you but all the wildlife which call the island home: please respect that.
Hope you enjoy your stay.

As city-dwellers who seek out remote places to enjoy nature every year, we were delighted to find Max’s magical Garden Island. It is rustic and comfortable, rugged and whimsical, and though tiny, it really does have everything you need. The bookshelves turn up everything from Agatha Christie novels to local maps and nature guidebooks, classic literature to obscure Norwegian thrillers. We used almost everything to hand: hammock, binoculars, emergency rain poncho, transistor radio, picnic kit, blankets, hot water bottles and board games; loved the little propane fridge, and the warmth of the wood stove on unexpectedly frosty summer nights. You’ll forget why you ever needed power when you first see the glow cast by the bunkie's many candle lanterns around your cozy hideaway. We also brought a couple of our own kerosene lanterns, which helped to light the porch and pathways at night and provide extra lighting when dining indoors. Unlike many cottage destinations, you won’t see motorboats or jet-skis nearby because of hidden rocks around the island. This freedom from noise, neighbours and technology (though you can charge your devices with the provided solar panels) is a rare pleasure, at least for us. When the sun goes down in front of the bunkie, you can head across the dock to the gorgeous flat rocks for cocktails and a spectacular sunset display. The gas barbecue + burner and portable butane cook stove are more than enough to cook up a feast, helped along by ample kitchen supplies, a generous spice rack, and a very handy outdoor prep and cleaning station. The warm outdoor shower feels like the absolute height of luxury, and the outhouse with composting toilet is a step up from many we’ve seen; clean and well-lit. The canoe is perfect for exploring the shoreline and local islands, but you're more likely to catch a photo-worthy fish right off the rocks. Near the bunkie, nature can be found in great abundance -- especially if you sit still to look. The resident family of red squirrels are a constant entertainment, though if you feed them they will become quite bold and demanding, sometimes mistaking fingers and toes for nuts – so beware. Luckily there's a well-equipped first aid kit for the hapless guest. If you’re bringing a tent there are some good wooded areas not far from the bunkie if you’d prefer to use the deck as a social space. Tie-ups on the deck are limited, so ask for details before you go. Max is the consummate host: helpful but discreet, very tuned in to the island’s rhythms, an expert on its flora and fauna, and clearly in love with the place. Don’t be shy to ask him if you need anything; he is a font of wisdom and he wants you to be happy. We stayed for 10 days, loved every moment, and hope to return someday. Thank you, Max, for sharing this special place with us.

To be honest I can frankly say this was one of the best experiences of my life. Me and wife stayed at the island as part of our first year marriage anniversary celebrations and we are just glad that we took this decision. The island is beautiful, the bunkie is same as described, rustic yet very very comfortable, and there is a lot to see, hear, enjoy, experience and savour. The bbq and hot bath were the great luxuries in such a place and canoe provided is great enough to explore around. We went canoeing, went swimming, pulling the canoe out here and there on small islands and then enjoyed the water and sun. Put up the tent on the plateform just for experience, made bonfire and sat around drunking. All in all it was complete package and value for money. The squirrels pose for you and we even spotted two gorgeous snakes ( not poisnous ofcourse) And Maxim is a great host, even greater a person, He lives on the opposite side, so complete privacy but he is also there whenever you need him, Also he has excellently arranged everything, So you won't be needing him much ( except like in our case we forgot bread and He was considerate enough to buy it for us). Only thing that you would like to consider is that if this is type of thing you looking for, no light, lots of mosquitoes and ofcourse you have to put up with the compost toilet, but if this your thing you won't even notice the bites we are carrying around. And for Max, thanks for everything, we ll be back for sure. Cheers, Aman & Napinder

This was a perfect get away. The island is amazing: quiet, peaceful, relaxing. The bunkie is charming and comfortable. It comes completely equipped - you literally need nothing but some food, water, and clothes. Max has thought of everything - literally everything. Terrific swimming and canoeing. Even the outhouse is good - almost charming - and its an outhouse! There is cell reception but do try to unplug - it was fabulous to do so. Max is an excellent host - attentive but gives you your privacy - unassuming and very very kind. Get to the island - you will be glad you did.

Max’s Garden Island with the bunkie is a special place, I would say, some far sanctuary of peace and chaste delight. We spent there a few unforgettable days enjoying with solitude and full immersion in wildlife that surrounded us. Calm and sunny weather predisposed to canoe trips around the Garden Island and to numerous islets nearby, bestowing with new spectacular sceneries, dream of photographer. Nipissing water was very calm and warm; you swim and then relax on smooth and hot granite rocks nearby, like a lizard. And it is so nice to sit near a firepit at summer starlight night. The Island wildlife gifted us observing a mink hunting voles, and witnessing of family life of 4 red squirrels. All of them were human friendly, like real islanders which never met a human aggression. Say, a squirrel could just jump and clime on your back like a tree. The bunkie is a little house built and organized very thoughtfully to give you maximal comfort and protection. There is no electricity, but you are supplied with a fridge to save your food even if weather is hot, and you can use solar battery to charge your phone, camera, or computer. You don’t need to bring buckets of water from lake to wash dishes, because Max supplied you with running water at the outdoor kitchen. And, oh my God, what a luxury, there is a hot shower! Inside the Bunkie is clean and comfortable. The glass entrance door is looking to the North-East, exactly where sun rises in summer. You feel yourself like at home among family photos and books. The only minus was annoying mosquitoes, especially in the evening from 7 to 11 pm. All the time the forest was reliably protected with them against our invasion. (Probably, autumn would be better time to explore it). Coleman’s bug jacket that we used can give you some protection, but it’s better to use it in combination with a bag spray, as we have found, mosquitoes nevertheless, can bite you through this jacket in areas where mesh clings to bare or covered with light fabric skin. By the way, for those who forgot about bloodsuckers, Max prepared a bag spray and a bug mesh hood inside the Bunkie. After this amazing travel we feel burst of energy, like recharging your body battery. For me, this island is a place of strength, and a place of my dreams, and we would like to come back when possible.

Max is a friendly and considerate host who shows his love of natural beauty with a quiet enthusiasm. My daughter wanted to have a vacation that separated our family from the world. She loved swimming off the rocks with the handy rope for pulling herself back out of the water. Her sleeping spot was upstairs in the loft. During the one rainy day, I read one of the novels out loud to everyone and she loved it. She even spotted two crayfish and was eager to practice casting her line while fishing off of the rocks. The bunkee was well-equipped and the outdoor kitchen was very functional. I already miss the sound of the water and we all want to come back next year.

I booked this for 4 days during our vacation. It was just me and my husband. I great communication with Maxim pre-trip. He quickly answered any questions and even sent a manual about the island . He picked us up at the marina just as planned. The island is a short boat ride away. We arrive and had a quick tour and he left us to this beautiful place. Later he brought over "Wayne" the canoe for our use. We did over pack and now know better. I loved the personal feel with the photos on the wall. It has everything you will need for cooking and the outdoor kitchen sink area was perfect. Loved the outdoor shower equipped with even shower toiletries. The outhouse was even cute. We enjoyed the great selection of books and games on a rainy day. Slept very well on the double futon. We spent our days fishing off the big rock to the left of the bunkie. My husband caught a 5 lb bass from shore. Took a canoe ride around the island and stopped off on some tiny rock island's to swim and explore. Maxim's house is way on the other side and no worries, you'll feel like your the only ones on the island. There was lots of wild berries and made some blueberry bannock for an evening treat. YUM! Lots of wildlife including dragonflies, ducks with their wee ones swimming, 2 minks, chipmunks ,herons, otter, a small water snake and 1 raccoon( only saw once) We also saw the most incredible sight as I sat inside gazing out at the scenery an eagle swooped down and grabbed a fish. It then landed on the off shore rock island in front and stayed their for quit awhile and ate it's dinner. I'll never forget that! You can watch both the sunset and sunrise Although I jumped out of bed as you can see the sunrise from the bed. I do love my sunsets. Although I'm really am too lazy to get up early to see a sunrise but I did there. I think I even enjoyed them more! Spectacular! Evenings we also enjoyed the firepit. The bunkie is lite by candles ,giving it a cosy and romantic ambiance. Maxim is a super host, easy going and witty. You have total privacy. He did stop by to ask if we needed anything in town and to drop off some wood for the woodstove on a windy rainy day where the temperature went from summer to fall. Well that's summer in Canada eh! The bunkie's rustic charm has it all. You really don't need to bring much more than sleeping bag, towel, food, drinking water, bug spray and bevi's. We would not hesitate to come back and will be! We truly thank you for sharing this slice of the heaven for others to enjoy. Nancy and Kent
