We have now have completed our third cottage restoration which we are calling "Why Not? It is a 1894 completely remodeled 4 season cottage located in an 1892 cottage community nestled in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Hershey park is only 15 minutes away, and 5 minutes away from the Pennsylvania Renaissance Fair & local wineries. "Why Not?" has the Mt. Gretna charm & ambiance but with the luxuries of modernity. Lebanon Local tax of 5% is included in rental price.

Le logement

"Why Not?" is a newly remodeled year round cottage in the cottage community of Mt. Gretna Pa. Tammy and I purchased this cottage and spent 1.5 years restoring it from the ugly 70's look back to the cottage charm but with the modern bathrooms and kitchen that you see in the photos. The cottage is nestled in the tall pines and other cottages that make up the Mt. Gretna Campmeeting community. Most of the cottages that make up Mt. Gretna Campmeeting are summer cottages but "Why Not?" is a fully remodeled, fully new-tech foam insulated cottage that can handle Pennsylvania's harshest winters. You'll find the warm gas central heat and the propane lookalike propane stove warm and inviting during the winter season.

Accès des voyageurs

Our guests can use all the areas of the cottage including the high efficiency washer/dryer. There is parking for 1 car beside the cottage off of 1st. Street. The large wrap around porch is what defines Mt. Gretna. You can walk around most evenings and end up on somebody's else's porch having a nice glass of wine.

Échanges avec les voyageurs

Most of the spring summer, and fall Tammy and I are staying in one of our three renovated cottages. Yes we caught the Gretna renovation bug but that's another story which should be told over a glass of wine. We are usually only minutes away should you have any problems or concerns.

Autres remarques

Mt. Gretna is a bustling art/music cottage community that hosts musicals & plays from NY in the Mt. Gretna Playhouse. The annual Mt. Gretna Art Show brings in 20,000 of our friends to view a juried art festival each August. Also we boast one of the best ice cream shops in PA called the Jigger Shop Ice Cream Parlor. One of our favorite things kids (and adults) like to do is go to the Mt. Gretna Lake & Beach. Going to this lake is like going back in time where you can bring your own toys/food and swing off of monkey vines, trapeze and platforms under the watchful eye of our wonderful lifeguards. 4 restaurants are within walking distance of the cottage. Just a short walk through the tall pines brings you to the Hideaway, Le Sorelle, The Timbers, or the Mt. Gretna Pizzeria.

Comfortable house with great little touches of home. Wonderful meeting place for a close group of friends or a family. Corner lot allows for a bit more privacy on the porch than other locations. This is a gem.

Thanks for that nice review. Tammy and I stay in each of our cottages often when they are not rented and we enjoy making it as clean and homey as possible. Yes we too love the porch and the privacy as the sitting area faces a non-drivable street making it more intimate. Thanks for staying with us and we hope to see you again in the future.

Nowhere else we've been compares to Mt. Gretna. It was beautiful, peaceful, and indescribably unique. The only potential downside would be that there is zero privacy as far as noise goes when in the home. We knew this going in, but still worth mentioning. It would not be my choice as a home to share with other adults (or kids) if I was looking for a romantic getaway. Great communication from Bob &a Tammy. Super easy check in. They were helpful in suggesting things to do in the immediate and nearby areas. Mount Gretna is magical. Bob & Tammy's home adds to that. Worth every cent.

You are right. If you're looking for a quiet getaway with kids or other adults, a Mt. Gretna cottage is not the place for quiet indoor privacy. We have a joke here that not many children are conceived here while families are on vacation. Almost all cottage homes here in Mt. Gretna are 125 years old and almost all the interior walls in these cottages are 3/4" wooden beadboard which makes noise easily transferable from room to room. There is no drywall or dead airspace in between walls to deaden the sound. A few cottages here have upstairs interior walls that only rise to 8' exposing the beautiful interior wood roofs. When renovating 100+ year old homes compromises have to be met and to install sound deadening walls would have ruined the Mt. Gretna cottage experience/ambiance that most folks demand when they vacation/visit Mt. Gretna. I'm glad you and your family had such a great time and we hope you'll return to Mt. Gretna soon.

Bob and Tammy are available but not intrusive they have a lovely honor system about the staples like sugar and coffee with multiple ways to brew :). Their welcome letter with the local activities kept me from getting a bunch of texts/phone calls while at work...I live locally and a goof happened with international flight arraignments so my family was here when I needed to work, therefor our mountain vacation happened in my backyard.

This was our first experience with Airbnb and had no idea what to expect. Our family usually does the beach vacation every year and we wanted to do something different. Mt. Gretna was only a 5 hour drive and it was close to many attractions such as Hershey, Lancaster, Philadelphia. Not to mention the town of Mt. Gretna had lots to do as well. "Why Not" was a cute cottage that we would be very happy to revisit. The front porch was used daily for family gatherings and we loved all the vintage decor throughout the home. It was like stepping back in time. You can tell that the hosts love what they do and took great care in reinventing this home for others to enjoy. The kitchen and bathrooms are quite updated and we were even able to use the grill outside to barbecue. The walls are thin and noise can be an issue for some, but not so much for us. It was nice to hear the kids having a good time. I brought back many wonderful photos of the home and of our stay. Our hosts were gracious and kind and even helped us when our car's battery was not working. They provide a lot of literature on where to go and what to do in the area. They also have a map in the kitchen so you can find your way around. Mt. Gretna itself is a jewel. It is a place that needs to be experienced at least once. And our family may do so again in the future!!

This is really a fantastic place. If you want to feel a tinny, historical, and warm place, this is good for you. It has three rooms, probably because it was built back to 1890s, it is not really soundproof. You can hear any voice from anywhere in the house. It is comfortable, clean and good to stay. We did enjoy it a lot. But a reminder, the check out time is 11:00 am and I didn't notice that, and it is kind of Bob and Tammy letting us late check out. I will recommend this place to others.

Thank you for that nice review. Yes "Why Not?" is in a small historical community called Mt. Gretna Campmeeting and you're right the cottage was built in 1894 when the United Methodist built the community as a religious revival getaway. Mt. Gretna is on the National Historic Register of places and we are very proud of that. Although the cottage has been totally renovated and has new-tech insulation in all the outside walls we left the interior walls original 5/8 old pine bead-board to keep as much of the charm and originality of Mt. Gretna, therefore sound travels pretty easily throughout the home. In historic renovations everything is a compromise. I'm glad you had a great time and I hope you return in the summer when Mt. Gretna is hustling and bustling with all of it's activity.

Tammy & I live just north of Hershey and have lived here all of our lives. Tammy just retired as a middle school math teacher and I'm winding down my career as a Delta Airlines pilot. Both Tammy and I used to come to Mt. Gretna as kids. Tammy's family came for the ice cream at the Jigger Shop, I came to sit at the Mt. Gretna Tabernacle for the Methodist revivals. Guess who has the better memories! When we had kids we'd bring them to Mt. Gretna to enjoy the Mt. Gretna Lake & Beach, the Jigger Shop, the musicals at the Mt. Gretna Playhouse and bicycle ride with them on the rails and trails that goes through Mt. Gretna. After they were off to college we were looking for something to do and came up with the idea of buying a cottage in Mt. Gretna to maybe retire here someday. After 2.5 years restoring our first cottage ("One Fine Landing") the restoration bug bit us and we subsequently now have 3 restorations under our belt, "One Fine Landing," While We're At It," and now "Why Not." We now are going to take a break and just enjoy using them ourselves and renting our cottage homes to folks who want to experience the charm of this village we call Mt. Gretna. However there is this cottage on 2nd street......
