À propos de ce logement
Casa Christensen is on a perfectly sited double lot at the confluence of Yalku Lagoon and Caribbean sea in Akumal (Mayan for "place of the turtles"). Designed by the acclaimed architect of Maroma Resort, the 4 bedroom, 4 bath home is surrounded by a large garden providing privacy. The living room opens to covered terrace and sun deck, just a few steps to the turquoise Caribbean, reef and gorgeous tropical sea life. Upstairs are a sunset deck and master suite with sweeping views and private deck.
Casa Christensen is in Akumal on Mayan Riviera of Mexico's Caribbean coast, about 65 miles south of the city of Cancun. Designed by Jose Luis Moreno, acclaimed Mexican architect of the Maroma Resort & Spa, the home is peaceful, private, a sanctuary retreat from which you can directly enter the famous Yalku Lagoon to enjoy swimming and snorkeling over the world's second largest barrier reef.
Entering our home through double doors, you'll be welcomed by views from the foyer through the living area to the ocean beyond. Two steps down into the circular living room, the ceiling peaks 30 feet above. The living room leads out to a covered terrace which faces a lagoon and the Caribbean. Adjacent to the living room and up two steps is the dining room and next to it a large, open kitchen. The library holds a collection of Maya and coral reef literature, which we request be left for other guests use. 3 bedrooms and 3 baths are on the ground floor: two adjoining bedrooms (two double beds each) each have their own bath and open to a covered terrace; the third bedroom (queen bed) has its own outside entrance and ensuite bath.
From the ground floor, a curved staircase leads up to the master suite, which includes a study opening out to the sunset terrace, enclosed master bedroom with king bed, large shower with windows to the sea, twin wash basins, 3 closets, w.c. alcove, and a private sunning terrace which opens off the master bedroom overlooking the ocean.
All major rooms face Yalku lagoon, on which the house fronts, adjacent to where the lagoon and the Caribbean meet. All bedrooms and kitchen have ceiling fans. Bath towels and other linens are provided and changed twice weekly, but guests should bring their own beach towels. We request that there be a maximum of eight guests.

Guests have access to the entire home and gardens. It’s a special treat to enjoy the lagoon. Yal-ku is a Maya word which means El Nido, or The Nest, in Spanish, referring to the use of the lagoon by many marine species for reproduction and early growth, until they are ready to enter the open sea. The lagoon has been designated a marine preserve so only swimming and snorkeling are permitted there. You enter the lagoon just 50 feet from our living room terrace; the many marvelously colored fish species and the varied types of coral make snorkeling in the lagoon a special experience; those not staying on the lagoon must enter via a paid commercial access. Yalku is part of the second longest coastal reef ecosystem in the world. If you enjoy scuba diving, Akumal has two very well-equipped dive shops that offer complete diving services.

This is the real asset that cannot be overstated! The house is staffed with a Mayan couple, Pedro and Octaviana, who are happy to serve our guests. They have been with us for 23 years and are wonderful. Pedro cares for the major aspects of the house and all of the garden. Octaviana makes the beds and cleans the bathrooms and the rest of the house daily. They wash up and put away in the kitchen — we put our things in the sink for them after meals. Neither Octaviana or Pedro speaks English, but they understand quite a bit. Their son, Pedrito, is available and fluent in English - he is our co-host. They’re very friendly, warm people and everyone enjoys them.
If you would like Octaviana to prepare and serve meals - she is a wonderful cook - the charge, to be paid to them directly, is a fixed $8 per person (for up to eight persons). Their service includes preparation, serving and cleanup. The shopping for food for your meal could be done by them; food costs would be paid to them by you. She can do anything from chiles rellenos to fish Yucateca, to mole dishes to chicken or pork pibil, and we have a barbecue for them to use for you, or for you to cook for yourselves!
Octaviana will also do laundry for you as needed. It is up to her to charge a fee or not. She will inform you.
Finally, if you feel they have served you well during your stay, we suggest 5% of your rental as a gratuity, which would be gratefully received by Pedro and Octaviana.
Two rules please: We only book week to week, Saturday to Saturday (7 days or 14 days or 21 days etc) and also, our caretakers, Octaviana and Pedro, and their son Pedrito, are family. They have been with us for 23 years! We ask all guests to treat them with great respect and kindness, just as they will treat you. Enjoy Octaviana's amazing cooking, they will care for you discreetly, leaving you your privacy to enjoy the peace of Casa Christensen. Thank you!

The Christensen Family now lives in Sun Valley, Idaho, but are originally from Marin County, California, where Doug Christensen was a builder/developer who loved enjoying wilderness. Doug found Akumal in the 1970s while diving off of Cozumel and built Casa Christensen in 1980 for his family to enjoy. His wife Ann and daughters Aimee and Eloise have enjoyed the home for nearly four decades and welcome you to enjoy it too! Octaviana and Pedro live on site in their own home and take care of the home and our guests, with their son Pedrito also helping our guests as he is fluent in English. They are a wonderful family, and we all are hosting you together.
