MIOKABEECHEE is a classic Oakland Beach cottage, recalling the early 20th-century heyday of this former beach colony. The neighborhood has changed a lot -- today it is mostly year-round residents -- but Oakland Beach remains a beachfront peninsula with a few great restaurants, a swimming beach, and a boat ramp. Enjoy waterfront walks, tasty clamcakes and chowder, and proximity to TF Green Airport and local wedding venues. Sorry, NO PETS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES and NO SMOKING INSIDE OR OUTSIDE.
Warwick's coast was once the place where the Providence working class went to relax by the shore. In the 1950s and 1960s, the city was developed into suburbs, but the charm of Warwick's former shore communities is retained. Oakland Beach was the quintessential summer colony in the early 1900s -- it had beach pavilions, a grand hotel, a rollercoaster, a carousel, and a midway. In the late 20th-century, after two hurricanes, a number of fires, and a movement toward Rhode Island's south-coast beaches, Oakland Beach lost its tune. More recently, with the expansion of Iggy's Doughboys and Boardwalk, work on a new carousel, and much cleaner waters in Narragansett Bay, Oakland Beach is a great place to spend some time by the water.
Our house, MIOKABEECHEE, is newly restored to the feel of the old Oakland Beach, with antique beds, a renovated kitchen and bathroom, and a cozy, well-decorated interior.
MIOKABEECHEE is a terrific place for couples to stay when attending a wedding at Aldrich Mansion or Harbor Lights, or for friends or family to stay when visiting Warwick relatives. Want to visit both Providence and Newport? Stay in Oakland Beach, between the two! Ask Stephanie and George, Warwick natives and avid boaters, about all of the waterfront activities available -- from sailing lessons to kayaking -- and for ideas about places to see, food to eat, and attractions to visit nearby!
We DO have free wi-fi (password on corkboard in kitchen), but we DO NOT have any television.
Free $5 Iggy's Doughboys gift card with every reservation -- Iggy's is a short walk from MIOKABEECHEE and a great place to eat clamcakes and chowder, doughboys, ice cream, root beer, fried seafood, and more!
The two upstairs bedrooms are equipped with 3 twin beds (back of house) and one full bed (front of house). The bathroom, downstairs, is small but well-appointed with a combined shower-tub (tub surround is new, tub itself is older) and new sink and toilet. Please note that because the bathroom is downstairs and the stairs are somewhat steep and narrow, guests with limited mobility may be limited to staying in the dowbstairs bedroom. The kitchen has new appliances including a Keurig coffee maker with plenty of K-Cups for you to use. Dishware and pots and pans are sufficient for you to cook something simple if you'd like, though there is not a pantry with food staples or the like. The yard is small but is fenced-in and private, and it has nice grass and a patio, and there is a small deck over the garage (limit to 4 persons at one time for weight reasons). The front porch is also a nice place to relax. We have kids and love kids and welcome your kids, but please help them respect the old beds and be super careful with them on the deck and around the HOT steam radiators.
Stephanie and George will be around to check you in and answer any questions. They live about 3.5 miles away and can drop back by as needed, but they won't be around generally to get in your way.
Oakland Beach is great, but it may not be for everyone. While it was once a summer resort, and while it's come back in a big way from its most neglected days, it is still a little rough on the edges, and you might hear loud neighbors and see houses of uneven upkeep. But we love it here, and if you see the world like a glass half-full, we think you will too.
You will probably drive here. There is one driveway parking spot, and street parking is permitted (except in snow emergencies). The neighborhood is very walkable, and it's nice to walk to dinner by the beach (around 0.5 miles each way). If you do not drive, there is good bus service to Providence from down the street ((URL HIDDEN) and Uber and Lyft provide some service here.
There is no extra cleaning fee, so please try to clean up the best you can. You can leave towels and sheets (please strip the beds) by the front door in the mesh laundry bags provided.
PLEASE TAKE EXTRA CARE WITH (1) THE HOT STEAM RADIATORS, (2) THE DECK (MAXIMUM 4 PERSONS, NO UNSUPERVISED KIDS), AND (3) THE STAIRS (KIND OF STEEP).
