Enjoy elevated camping at our family-run, organic farm, Granja Urkuwayku, Ilaló Volcano. Located about 100 meters from the tent, awaits your own furnished kitchenette (with grill and wood stove), covered porch, and your own bathroom with shower. We provide breakfast, which includes farm-fresh yoghurt, granola, eggs, bread, juice, and coffee. Over 100 kms of walking and biking trails surround, including hot springs (closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic) and bus service to Quito just minutes away.

Le logement
Granja Urkuwayku is a family-run organic farm on 5 hectares. Through water harvesting and creative use of plants and animals, over 15 years we managed to transform a degraded wasteland to an oasis that becomes greener with every passing year. We offer a glamping platform tent (queen-sized bed) with space for pitching further tents for children. If space is needed for an additional couple, we have a double bed in our independent, Casa de Cangahua guest house. Overall, we limit lodging to four adults, plus children. We grow over 50 crops, including European vegetables, Andean grains, and roots, and tubers as well as fruits and medicinal herbs. We also rear guinea pigs (a local delicacy), chickens for egg production, and bees for honey. There are a trampoline and swing-set for the kids. We are active in Ecuador's agroecology and food movements and have close ties with pioneering farmers, chefs, and food activists.

Accès des voyageurs
Guests have full run of the farm as well as access to the surrounding volcano. When open, hot springs await just 3 kms away (a 20 minute walk) in the Village of La Merced. If you would prefer not to cook your own meals, with advance notice, we could recommend provocative local restaurants and cafes.

Autres points à prendre en note
Further to hiking about Ilaló, you can use Urkuwayku as your base camp for hiking or mountaineering on six surrounding volcanoes (Pichincha, Pasachoa, Ruminahui, Sincholagua, Ilinizas Norte, and Sur) as well as the glaciers Antisana, Cotopaxi, and Cayambe, all within a two-hour drive. If the outdoors were in your plans, we'd be pleased to share our experience and recommend highly qualified biking, rafting, or mountaineering service.

Please note that camping involves a degree of exposure to the elements, and climate on the equator and at high altitudes can be extreme. Visitors should arrive prepared for a diversity of weather. In addition, please note that we have multiple animals (chickens, guinea pigs, cats, dogs, bees, and other insects) and plants (vegetables, field crops, fruit trees, and other species) on the farm. If you have a particular allergy or other concern, do not hesitate to consult us before making a reservation.

My wife, Myriam Paredes, and I are organic farmers, food activists and academics. We have worked with agroecology movements in Central and South America over the last 25 years. Our research addresses questions of local potential and sustainability in agriculture and food, but, to be honest, our true passions reside in practical farming and good food and conversation. We are avid backcountry folk with extensive experience on the trails, ridges and peaks of Ecuador and elsewhere in the Andes.
