I moved to Bar Harbor in the summer of 1972 and built Moss Mountain Cottage in 1988 as a single mother, raising my daughter who now lives in California with her family. In 1997 I reconnected with my first Bar Harbor boyfriend, Bill, a lifelong "islander" and carpenter. We married and moved to his home in downtown Bar Harbor, across the street from my three lively and lovely granddaughters. Bill retired a few years ago and I last summer from my job as Associate Director of Summer Programs at College of the Atlantic. We now spend most of our time enjoying our family and welcoming guests to our cottage. As a young girl, my daughter and her cousin who visited each summer from Virginia, spent countless hours searching the backwoods of the cottage property to collect moss. Their grand plan was to make wreaths they would sell to the tourists - leading to their fame and fortune! They named the 'hill' where they found the prettiest moss, 'Moss Mountain.' Although they never sold a wreath (I'm not even sure they completed one), they spent hours in our backyard laughing and planning their futures, as little girls love to do. I'll always treasure those days and those girls, and it is this fond memory that inspired the name 'Moss Mountain Cottage.' I can only hope that my guests will return home with equally special memories as well.
