Get away to your own private retreat, perfect for a staycation or a change of pace while working from home. This woodland cabin has all the modern conveniences of home (fast internet!) while offering northwoods peace and quiet. Surrounded by public forest and near the Sturgeon Lake chain, hours of outdoor activities await you. If you'd rather spend your time indoors, this comfy cabin has you covered with everything you need for a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a weekend with friends.

Le logement
Our cabin is a wonderful retreat for all seasons. Whether you're looking to relax indoors by the fire, work from home in style, or go on a wilderness adventure, you are welcome here. Enjoy a private five acre property that borders George Washington State Forest.

For the outdoor enthusiast, there's a bird-watching bench, a bags/cornhole set, badminton or volleyball net to set up, and nearby trails through the pines. There are two mountain bikes you can borrow to ride to town or hit the Mesabi Trail. To enjoy the many lakes that are less than 15 minutes away, we also have two high-quality inflatable kayaks (Sea Eagle 370s) that can serve as either tandem (2-person) or solo kayaks. Easy to throw in the car and inflate with a foot pump at the lake! We also offer our 17' Gruman aluminum canoe with a car-loading kit if you'd rather take a canoe to the chain of five lakes nearby. For swimming, canoeing, and kayaking, McCarthy Beach State Park is a ten-minute drive away, with a swimming beach, modern changing facilities, and canoe rental.

While the fun and excitement of the lakes are just a few minutes away, our cabin offers guests a retreat that is off the beaten path, where they can experience the sights and sounds of the wilderness. (And as a bonus, we still enjoy the waterfront aesthetic, with a gorgeous view of our neighbor’s pond). Watch the chickadees, woodpeckers, and many other birds flock to the feeders while you sip your morning coffee in the sun room, and listen to the frogs croaking in the evening as you sit around the fire pit. After watching the sun set over the pond, you'll see a beautiful sky full of stars, and sometimes even the northern lights. If you venture outside at night, you might catch a glimpse of an owl or flying squirrel, or you might hear the wolves howling in the distance.

On a rainy day, you can sip cocoa or a cocktail in the screened-in gazebo, choose a movie to watch on the cozy couch, relax by a roaring fire, cook a gourmet meal in our fully equipped kitchen, or enjoy one of our many puzzles and games at the game table while the birds visit the feeders just a few feet away. No matter the season, your vacation can be as relaxing or action-packed as you like.

The cabin has convenient sleeping arrangements: two bedrooms with comfy wooden beds, including a queen with double-thick mattress in the master bedroom and a twin-over-full bunk bed to ensure everyone gets a great night's sleep. A queen-sized futon and twin size pull-out loveseat in the common space can sleep a few more. The master bedroom boasts an en-suite bath complete with shower and oversized whirlpool tub, and there's an additional bathroom with shower off the living room as well. The entire cabin is on one level-- no steep stairs to navigate! Our fiber internet is fast and reliable, so you can be as connected (or disconnected) as you like.

The Side Lake area has some great places to eat and drink that are full of local character, plus attractions ranging from bike trails and nature programs to museums and live music venues. Chisholm, Hibbing, Virginia, and Grand Rapids are all within an hour.

Send us a message today if you have any questions about our place-- we're always happy to provide more detailed information or discuss a longer stay.

Current note: We are currently still taking bookings. If you have to be stuck somewhere, we think our little piece of wilderness is a pretty fantastic place to do it!

For the health and safety of our guests (and ourselves) during the COVID-19 outbreak, we are leaving extra time between guests during June. In addition, we have beefed up our cleaning regimen, making absolutely certain that we sanitize all surfaces, knobs, handles, light switches, etc. between guests. Of course, guests are invited to use our cleaning products to do some additional sanitizing if that’s how you prefer to kick off a vacation. (You do you, friend.)

Finally, please note that, a day or two before check-in, we will ask all guests to confirm that everyone in their household has shown no symptoms of COVID-19. If you are ill, we ask that you stay home. We will waive our cancellation fees for circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including if you or someone in your house is sick, or if there are mandatory travel restrictions.

Accès des voyageurs
You'll have the house to yourself, including the yard and five acres of surrounding woods.

There is a caretaker house on the property a distance from the main house, and we may be there during your visit, but we will leave you to your privacy unless you need us.

Autres points à prendre en note
Our northwoods location means we coexist with wildlife on the property, so we recommend that you be prepared to encounter some critters on the grounds and once in a while in the house-- part of the joy of living in the wild! We'll provide a handy visitor's guide to animals you may encounter. Most of the wildlife is wonderful, but we suggest bringing along bug spray (though we try to keep some on hand as well) to deter the less-wonderful varieties of wildlife.

We recommend bringing slippers or flip-flops on your trip, as we ask folks to remove shoes in the house, and the tile floor can sometimes feel chilly!

If you have questions about this, do drop us a message.

Side Lake, Minnesota, États-Unis

Side Lake is a thriving community with lots of charm. McCarthy Beach State Park, with swimming, fishing, canoe rental, and other activities, is four miles away. There are five lakes nearby, all with some public access, as well as hundreds of acres of state forest, so you can fish, boat, ski, snowshoe, snowmobile, bike, and hike to your heart's content.

There are a couple cute (and tasty!) restaurants in town, as well as a gas station and a general store that sells ice cream and basic supplies. Chisholm, a little further down the road, has a bakery and several more restaurants and shops, as well as the Minnesota Discovery Center, Minnesota Museum of Mining, and a local landmark, the giant statue of an iron worker.

Thirty minutes away is the town of Hibbing, with lots of dining options, as well as beautiful Historic Hibbing, the breathtaking Hull-Rust Mine View, and the Greyhound Bus Museum. Grand Rapids and Virginia, also nearby, offer museums, shopping, recreation, and entertainment.

One hour south is the Sax-Zim Bog, a nationally known birding location that's open year 'round, but especially popular in the winter. You can birdwatch from your car or hit the trails around the Welcome Center.

Note that the cabin is not directly on a lake, but McCarthy Beach State Park is very close, and has great amenities.

I'm an artist and nonprofit administrator. In my spare time, I enjoy outdoor activities (like hiking and camping), board games, and live music. I'm originally from Iowa. I once got horribly lost on the way to the American Embassy in Moscow while carrying ten pounds of mashed potatoes. That experience made me much more diligent about reading maps! My partner and I are excited to welcome guests to our cabin in northern Minnesota. It's our favorite retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. We enjoy canoeing on the nearby lakes, then cooking over the firepit in the evening. We also enjoy discovering out-of-the-way restaurants around the Iron Range. We're always happy to recommend our favorite local places and activities to guests! I love exploring the art scene of places I visit; I especially like finding little-known places that locals go to but that might not be frequented by tourists. For example, in Pittsburgh I was excited to discover the Banjo Club, a weekly practice of a 20-member banjo ensemble at a local Elk's Club. As a guest, I'm fairly independent. I strive to be considerate of others' schedules, privacy, and preferences. However, I also enjoy gaining new perspectives from locals. A personal recommendation is worth a dozen Yelp reviews!

We are available via phone, text, and e-mail to answer questions and give recommendations about the area. During your stay, we may be residing in the caretaker house, a short distance away from the main house, though we'll leave you to your privacy unless you need our assistance, and it's likely you won't even know we're there. The guest house is far enough away that the main house still feels private.
