‘Thanikotuwehena Oyagawa’ - the "River House" is an outstanding 4-acre property, a powerful combination of spiritual history and flowing water. The perfect place to relax & chill, reconnect with your inner self, nature, friends & family.
Ideal for couples, small groups of friends who look for style whilst exploring the “Cultural Triangle” (e.g. Sigiriya, Dambulla Rock Temple). Nature sites nearby: Minneriya, Kandalama, ancient Rose Quartz mountain, Ritigala Forest Monastery, beautiful walks.
Our House is an open-plan, eco-friendly contemporary design with a lot of local, traditional elements. The floors upstairs are made out of reclaimed railway sleepers; the roof is thatched with local grass; the doors & windows are reclaimed from old houses from all over the island; local artists paintings & artworks are dotted around. This is a relaxed an relaxing place to enjoy - with friends, family or alone. You can swim in the river below if it is flowing well, hang out in the hammock under giant bamboo overlooking the river, meditating, doing yoga or reading in the ambalama, making a bonfire or BBQ either near the river or the house, go for lovely walks or just chill & watch a movie in the line upstairs. The house is very communicative as most spaces are open. It has a separate guest room & bathroom with its own terrace and 2 bedrooms on the 1st floor of the main house, sharing one bathroom. The TV lounge is to share and accommodate an extra guest if need be. There is an additional outdoor shower for 2 with waterfall-spouts to enjoy alfresco bathing. The kitchen is stylish & functional and again semi-open with work surfaces including gas cooker, sink and hand wash basin; the multifunctional oven and all necessary mini appliances are available; you'll find a separate lockable storage room for food & supplies and the fridge/freezer (standard size). The bog open-plan dining & living lounge is connected with the kitchen; extra guest toilet is right it hand nearby. So everything one needs, but with a lot of style & character!

Échanges avec les voyageurs
Since Dambulla is almost 140km away from Colombo, where I live, I probably won't be able to personally greet you or interact with you during your stay. Sadly! However, I am only a phonetical or (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) call/Facetime away to interact with you and assist with you in case of queries. For sure I will call you once you have arrived at our property. Was, our friendly caretaker, who speaks reasonably well English, will look after you and help you. In addition there is a comprehensive Guest Guide Book at the house to give you a good overview of what to do (and what not to do), where to go, tips for shopping, dining & recreation, excisions etc. So you are not left alone by all means! We also have a Guest Book and would be very happy to receive your comments during or after your stay with us.
Please be aware that Sri Lanka is a tropical country with a changing, tropical climate - from very humid & hot, to dry & hot with cool evenings or rainy. Hence the way you treat food is different. Things go mouldy faster or get infested with tiny ants. Hence leave no food outside unattended!
These changes often bring different creatures into the house: small black or big red ants, geckos, spiders (rarely), cockroaches (very rarely) or mice (very rarely). Don't worry about them, try and life with and around them.
Also you must be aware of wildlife outside the house - the friendly ones: a multitude of birds, butterflies, squirrels, bats, lizards and peacocks running around the property regularly. The not so friendly ones: monkeys (don't tease them or encourage them with food! NEVER FEED THEM!), snakes (mostly non-poisenous like the brown rat snake), black & yellow giant monitor lizards. The motto: "Live and let live!" largely applies. You can make friends with the resident cat COCO, who will cuddle up to you and sadly try & jump onto the table. Simply ask Wasan to take him away.
- Be mindful of all antiques
- Be mindful of wildlife - such as monkeys, snakes, ants, geckos
