I had booked a trip with Joe (really Mary) as she is the one who I communicated with on the AirBnB site. I booked this trip around July 18th for a scheduled arrival on September 8th and for a stay of one month. When I initially communicated with Mary on the AirBnb site she seemed very nice and responsive. About a month later I called her and started some email dialogue. Again she was very nice and responsive. On the last day of August I called Mary and left a VM. When she didn't return my call I emailed her the next day and didn't receive a response. This seemed a bit strange as this didn't seem to fit her normal pattern. I then called her again the next day and after leaving another VM this time she returned my call. This was now September 1st ( a week before my scheduled arrival). I had indicated during the conversation that I was interested in possibly staying another month (something I had also communicated in an earlier email). She had seemed fine with it in the earlier email and seemed to be fine with it again now. After we got off the phone she called me right back and said they might have to cancel the reservation because of the upcoming weather that might be effecting their place. She said that she would call me back the next day and let me know. When I didn't hear from her the next day, I called her and got her VM. Her mailbox was full so I couldn't leave a message. Based on her tone from the previous call, her mailbox being full and her not calling me when she said she would I became a bit concerned. As I also had Joe's number(remember I had no prior communication with him), I then called him. The first two times I called I had the phone hung up on me. The third time I called he answered. He then asked who this was. I said it was the guest you had scheduled to arrive this coming Friday. He then said why are you calling me three times. I responded that I am calling you the third time because you hung up on me the first two. He then said we are evacuating and hung up. I was quite upset when this happened and immediately called AirbnB. As everybody knows, Hurricane Irma arrived in Florida that coming Sunday. However, at the times of our communication nobody knew exactly when or where it would go. All the host had to do was call me back when they said they would and say they were canceling based on the impending weather conditions or at the very least communicate that with me in a polite manner when I had to call them. I was traveling from overseas and had nowhere else to stay. Additionally, if they had to cancel they could have said we are sorry about this...
