1BR Tamarack Cottage is a cheerful mini-version of great-grandma's 40s farmhouse shoehorned into a wee depression-era cottage. Small but comfy, with wifi and smart HDTV (antenna/Netflix), hang out inside or explore beautiful north central Washington. Regional attractions are easy jaunts. Grocery store 2 blocks away. Not suitable for children or the physically challenged. Now small pet friendly. Discount and late checkout for 2-day bookings.

Le logement
Tamarack is one of my Kokanee Cottages -- the east half of what may be the world's smallest duplex. (Pine Cone is the west half, separate entrances at opposite ends of buidling.) Even though Tamarack is a wee one-bedroom unit, it has everything you need to make your stay in the country a pleasure -- a little kitchen with vintage kitchen queen and apartment-sized range, microwave, crockpot, blender, toaster, wee food processor, espresso machine, and regular coffeemaker. A full-size fridge/freezer guarantees you'll never have to worry about cold drinks. No dishwasher, but a nice porcelain double sink. The classic chrome and yellow Formica kitchen table is a cheery focal point, and a place to roll out cookie dough because counter space is pretty much nonexistent. Watch the smart HDTV (antenna/Netflix) and Blu-ray DVD player from the comfy sofa. The little electric fireplace adds extra coziness in winter. There's AC in the summer, so delicious to come back to a cool space. And beer mugs in the freezer will help you chill out, too! The overflow teacups and teapots from neighboring Nootka Rose Cottage are in the curved glass curio cabinet along with the crystal wine glasses, sip sip. Vintage floral prints and etchings and an awesome tole sconce sweeten up the living room. In the bedroom, a 50s double bed frame (turquoise as found) goes perfectly with the killer mirror and washstand I scored at Nana's Nook just a few miles away. Cheerful patchwork and floral cotton quilts and a lovely 12-inch memory foam mattress will have you snoring in nothing flat. One of my favorite fine art prints (baby ducklings by Carl Brenders) welcomes you when you enter, and a classic landscape offers a restful view when it's time to go to sleep after a glorious day in the country. The two Royal Canadian Mounted Police vintage prints in the cottage are a nod to my Canadian roots. The bathroom has the usual facilities without, actually, a bath (just a shower). And a really big floral print I scored at the Barter Fair for a pittance. You'll feel at home as soon as you walk in to Tamarack Cottage!

Okanogan, Washington, États-Unis

Geralyne’s vacation home is located in Okanogan, Washington, United States. The City of Okanogan (the county seat but in all respects a small town) is centrally located in Okanogan Valley in north central Washington, putting you right in the middle of a great area to explore and enjoy. The city pool and Okanogan River are two blocks away; Salmon Creek even closer. The city also boasts a historical museum and farmers market. A nice grocery store is just two blocks north of the cottages.

The best fries on the planet are served at The Club tavern, within walking distance. (Their burgers and steaks are awesome, too.) The best breakfasts are at the Stockyard Cafe, a local haunt that is off the tourist track, and Smallwoods (2 miles south), where you can also buy organic produce and artisanal foods (they smoke their own meats in the summer, try their Porker). The Breadline Cafe 4 miles north in Omak is amazing, check out their Saturday brunch.

Also in Omak is Valley Lanes, if you're inclined to go bowling, and who wouldn't be? Beautiful Omak Lake is a mere 9 miles away, a hidden gem on the Colville Reservation and thus far totally undeveloped except for outhouses at the gorgeous beach nestled between granite cliffs that are mysteriously not crawling with climbers practicing for El Capitan. Balance Rock is 3 miles farther along the lake (a very short hike from the road), and if fishing is your thing, the lake is teeming with Lahontan cutthroat.

The north central area of Washington state is still a bit of a mystery for many coasties, so nip on over and see what they haven't discovered yet. Come over one spectacular mountain pass and go back over another. Regional attractions are all easy day trips by car -- no more than 2 hours each way. Double back or see more by making loop trips.

Visit Bavarian-style Leavenworth, the Old West town of Winthrop, or the ghost town of Molson. Enjoy the beaches of Chelan or Penticton, B.C. Admire back road mountain and desert scenery (don't miss Grand Coulee) or lush orchards and vineyards (Canada's top wine-growing region starts at the border, my favorite winery is Blasted Church just south of Penticton). Stop to look at wildlife and take photos of a million postcard views. Hike, hunt for antiques, fossils, gold; go swimming, boating, fishing. Taste the local produce in season, or eat out at wonderful restaurants, cafes, and pubs.

Rodeos add excitement in summer – the Omak Stampede with its famous Suicide Race is just 4 miles from the cottage! My favorite used/new bookstore (Daydream Books) is at the north end of town (the little house with the lions out front). It's a great area to do a great many things, or even better, maybe, do absolutely nothing.

I may or may not be in one of the other cottages during your stay - I live in Tonasket (half hour north) but I’m frequently in Okanogan slowly sprucing up the cottages. I am always accessible by phone or email, so we can stay in touch. In winter, there is a wonderful caretaker onsite.
