More than a destination, a stay in here is an experience you will never forget. If you are looking for convenient overnight lodging, this is not it. This Alaskan homestead was founded in 1943; Lightwood Cabin has no electricity, refrigeration, or running water. Clean outhouse and outdoor solar shower stall provided. Owners are next door. Two rivers merge at the edge of the property, and Lion Head rises above them with a view of two mountain ranges, rivers, and miles of the Matanuska Glacier.

Le logement
Slow down and relax in a quiet and beautiful setting, where you seem to step back in time to a simpler day. The private Lightwood Cabin is off the electric grid, with no running water or refrigeration. Built in 1960 by Sam Lightwood and Jim Hitchcock, the cabin has two bedrooms up a steep staircase, with one queen bed and one double, and a single bed in the living room. The simple kitchen is equipped with a propane stove and light, pots and pans, dishes and utensils, coffee and tea, spices and herbs. Pure well water, clean linens, propane, charcoal, and firewood are provided. Efficient wood stove for heating or cooking. Outdoor charcoal grill. Clean outhouse. Outdoor solar shower stall. Best enjoyed in stays of at least two nights.

Accès des voyageurs
The Lightwood Cabin is available for your exclusive use. There are two small rooms and a closet used for storage by hosts.
Summer time offers hiking trails on 40 acres and in the nearby mountains. Caribou Creek and the Matanuska River are sites for commercial white water rafting. Caribou Creek is a recreational gold panning area, and a favorite for rock hounds, with acres of semi-precious stones.
In winter time, enjoy the aurora and stars with no light pollution. You can snow shoe or cross-country ski the trails and river beds with your equipment. Snow machines are welcome on the Matanuska River, a wide, braided stream river bed. Experienced ice climbers can climb upstream on Caribou Creek.
The Matanuska Glacier is nearby with summer time unguided access, guided tours, and ice climbing, available through local vendors. Guided tours on the glacier are available all winter, as well.
Identifying animal tracks is a favorite winter and summer activity.
Sheep Mountain is home to Dahl Sheep. Spring and fall see migratory birds passing; the annual HawkWatch on nearby Gunsight Mountain is from March 7 - May 15, with the Hawk Watch Weekend being April 21-22

Autres points à prendre en note
Trails are rough, the staircase is steep, and there are no ramps. If you have questions about accessibility, please contact us. Children must be aware of dangers of a hot wood stove. You will be responsible for your own food and meals. The nearest grocery store is 60 miles away. All-wheel drive or four-wheel drive vehicles are required for winter-time access down a 1.4 mile-long driveway. The driveway is not recommended for trailers.

Jim and I are long-time Alaskans, having been here 79 and 36 years, respectively. Jim has been a master log home builder for most of his adult life. He also flew single engine planes as a bush pilot and a flight instructor. Beatrice is retired from ministry. Both of us have spent years in community theater in Alaska - Jim as an actor, director, and set builder, and Beatrice as an actor, producer, and costume designer. Jim grew up on this homestead, moving here with his parents when he was 10 years old. Jim semi-retired in 2005, and this has been our permanent home since then. We appreciate the peace and beauty, and living in harmony with the wild animals around us.

Hosts are long time Alaskans and happy to share knowledge of the fauna, flora and area attractions. If you like firsthand stories of Alaskan life, starting from 1939, you’ll be in the right place. We are happy to help you learn the ropes of heating with wood, lighting without electricity, and bathing without a bathroom. In a pinch, you may recharge cell phones in the hosts’ home, which has a limited electric system.
